I rode the 70 to a Harley bike show and didn't win. Dagnabit.
I realize now the detail on the rest of the bike is lacking. This is the agony of patina, it's OK until you do new paint then the rest sticks out like a sore thumb. The header is butt ugly with the blue chrome and loooong muffler, so the next time I feel like I can spend the bucks I'll get a set of yamiya pipes from DSS.

I wouldn't worry about it Don, folks get sucked into building showbikes then don't ride them because they worry about stone chips or oil leaks marring their over-restored trailer queens, I'd rather see a well patina'd bike out on the road than a statue of a bike at a show. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

It's mostly the $40 exhaust and engine detail lacking on it. The frame was powder coated and it's a total engine out. new wiring, etc  deal so there's really no reason it isn't perfect. Except I'm easily distracted by Sandcasts, drag cars, street rods, goldwings, 400F's, and so on. All of the parts this bike deserved went on a 71 that got sold to David Silver Spares for racing money. lol.

There are parts on the diecast that have been upgraded several times. That right control probably has parts from four or five and the headlight button is up to be replaced again.

I just noticed I have soda in my ears. Off to the showers! Someday I'll build a booth until then I'll use the grey sky blasting booth. The soda keeps the grass out of the expansion joints

Don, buy yourself a sand blasting hood. Other than getting hot you won't have the abrasive or soda pelting you and you don't have to worry with that pesky soda in your ears.  Just add vinegar...that would get it out right?
(Probably not if it is not bicarbonate soda.)

Yamiya sell NEW improved tripples without need of the spacer! With and without an additional hole in the horny part. What is the hole for?
http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_144_72&products_id=716

With hole
http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_144_72&products_id=3242

It cost some to restore gauges. I have a complete K2 set shipping my way right now, hopefully no beginning of cracks. It need some new parts, bottom covers, faces, glasses, seals, fasteners ... Yamiya has it all.

The old gauge setup is a vital part of the specific bikes design.
Important to be aware of how the gauge is designed to be illuminated. I have a K6 restored tacho that has very bright white light while my stock speedo has a nice green light. I noticed that the inside of top steel covers has to be painted green which must be the answer.
The older gauges might have been painted inside too...

Just drain the wallet!! An old CB750 is like a prostitute, need money all the time and difficult to resist! ;)
PeWe,
VDO used to make bulb covers that slipped over incandescent bulbs to change their color to green, blue, red, etc.
They probably still do.  You could put a green LED in the gauge.
Yes, inside and out needs to be painted and the proper color. The CB550 Tach I took apart and then shattered the face on it by someone bumping the shelving unit it was on knocking something else over that caused a cascade of things to drop among them the disassembled tach.  So much for that budget refresh job I was doing.  It was the first gauge I've opened...for a motorcycle. Done lots of car instrument panels and other stuff auto related.  The VDO Cockpit series are not designed to be opened.  Requires some careful surgery even if it has a metal gauge body (bezel not included). Then you have to replace the plastic you took away when cutting it apart... as face and rear of gauge body must be a certain distance apart. Better to just replace them. Sometimes the face and glass inside has issues with dirt or dust or ash for a heavy smoker and the bezel needs work. I've even seen the VDO that Volvo put in their 240 series with bezels that were rusting! Smoker's car and it was filthy and the gauges had a coating on the bezel and body that made them feel damp on a rainy day. That was retaining moisture and I guess the acids or dirt broke down the paint enough to make them rust. Most of the Volvo marked VDO gauges are plastic bodied for the Cockpit 52mm/2 1/16" gauges, exception was the small tach and often the clocks were metal cased/bodied.

So, see if you can find a bulb cover or go with a green LED...that would be my course of action. Presuming you don't want to disassemble the gauges. The interior paint is not a flat but a matt and it has a little texture to it giving it a softer glow.

What happens to gauges that people overcoat with a vinyl sticker?  The original gauge...didn't the white/cream ink have a bit of transparency for the light allowing it to show up a little better?  Not a modern lighted numbering setup...

Some of the instrument panels from 70s/80s used colored plastic film that the gauge lighting shown through giving that green illumination.

Replacement gauge faces are often too bright because the factory faces are painted on both sides but the aftermarkets often just have the sticker on one side. I notices that on my 550 where my tach has a replacement sticker on a fresh clear plastic face, whereas the speedo is still the original (it's in great shape) and I noticed when I had it apart to paint and tighten down the face screws that the backside of the face is painted green too, so all the illumination is basically from indirect light that leaks around the edges.

The original K0 face I removed from the tach had a light blocker over some areas of the back side. I noticed today how nice the tach turned out, it compares well to the NOS speedometer. It has 16 miles on it already, there goes the warranty.  My new autometer gauges have the bulb covers but not a green, or a guy could possible try colored LED bulbs. I used a blue push in bulb in the 400F park lamp.

Lest anyone think I'm a high roller, the purchase price of the entire line-up was $5150. Of course I've spent several times that over the last 10 years making them look like this. My shop partner and I rebuilt two alcohol funny cars to help fund the bikes and a race car.

Actually, I have a Sulphur yellow tank in the shop for the 400. with black and yellow sidecovers. I wasn't too wild about the 78 gas cap cover though.

Next up in my mind is the K4 motor in the diecast. I have the unstamped K0 replacement motor I went to W. Va to get. It needs a rebuild but my dragbike isn't running yet either.

The 70 was running poorly after having a bad voltage regulator. I swapped it for a good one and the volts are back up and the battery checks OK. The blinkers blink with the engine off. (positive test) Anyway first #3 was dead, the next day it was #1. They both picked up after I dried the plugs. Something is seeping fuel if the petcock is left on so I'm going back into the carbs again. I changed the plugs to the denso u groove ones and it's on 4 again. I took the carbs off my gl1000 so the lift is now tied up.
The tank has fairly fresh gas because it was recently painted, the cap was taped off I hope it didn't get anything inside. I'll check the sediment bowl and screen next. Then see which carb is overflowing.

I bumped the carb, drained the bowls and it cleaned right up. No current leakage. No miss.
The more I ride the 70 the better it runs, woo hoo! This winter I'm taking the Kenny Harmon F cam out and putting the 77F cam back in. I just don't rev it enough for the big cam and think it was torquier with the smaller cam. As soon as I sell another bike I'll order a set of 4-4's for it.

Curious: Did you degree in the KHF, or did it run well on stock marks?

I degreed it in, with a couple degrees of advance to help the bottom end. If I remember correctly. It does run good, I just don't get into the power band very often and remember the 77F cam being more torquey with the 836 kit at lower rpm's. I also have an RC 327 and an engle cam in the 1124 stroker engine. I should measure the engle, it may be a more reasonable grind. It doesn't appear to be welded, might just be reground.

I just sealed a deal on a 6/70 K0. No title, no wrinkle tank, long chain guard but it has all the rest. Rolled rim, good number spread, worn ducktail seat, good seat pan, parts of the original gauges, single cut fender. Pics when I get it home in the morning.  I just realized I don't have a gold one. Yet.  Only fast action got this deal started, another guy got there right after I agreed to buy it.

I got it home, it's been neglected for a while and the title is pending, but I had to act with or without one. My phone is doing an update and lost it's wifi connection so the photos aren't loading yet.  The carbs are gooed, it has newer plug caps and fuel lines. I rinsed the tank it's not as bad as some I've saved, I have a really nice one but not sure which side the petcock is on. No spare wrinkle tanks. Maybe I can make a wrinkle die that fits in the gas cap. lol.
Never stop watching craigslist and facebook, I found a diecast engine with no numbers, a sweet 71 and this 70 on facebook either the sohc pages or marketplace. I was on this one in 20 minutes. Just dumb luck.
