This Sandcast has had a chrome kit put on it, It includes the rocker cover, slightly pitted of course. The right side motor mounts, the 9hole clutch cover plate, and the 3 usual left side engine covers. If not for that, I'd assume the engine has never been out. None are in perfect condition.
I'm wondering what effect that has on the percieved originality of a sandy and what problems are associated with removing the chrome from the aluminum parts.

Edit, I later met the son of the original owner, he took the parts to Rock Island Il. to be chromed. His Dad wasn't pleased and I think it cost him the right to ride the bike. The short story is these are the original parts, chromed.

I had a couple of sandy parts that were chromed but I was lucky they didn't do a good job and most of it peeled off.if they copper coated it before chroming like they should it will be tough without some kind of chemical removal.bill

I suspect few were copper/nickel/chrome plated. The front A arms on my race car had the same thing. I peeled them like an orange.

Don I had the same problem with my sandcast restoration. I had Brown's Plating remove the old chrome. It was about half the price of having it chrome plated if I remember correctly. They did a good job removing the old flaky chrome. You then have a tone of polishing to do to get the parts back to their original glory. The process took me at least a months worth of weekends.

I hear Browns is the place to go. Thanks for the info. This is a case where you can't just get parts off another bike.
The pullback handlebars are off and the stock bars are on loose, waiting for controls.

One of my friends has a few Indian and Simplex motorcycles. He realized that he knows the son of the original owner of the sandcast. It seems the dad bought the 750 and a mini trail for his son the same day. The son still has the mini trail. I saved the red metalflake grips and ape hangers in case he wants them. He, however can't have the 750 back.
TIP
It helped a lot to use a heat gun while pulling the wires through the bars and removing the grips. That's the first time I tried that. And a little silicone spray.

An old boy at the auction told my friend I paid way too much for that old 750. My buddy said, it's one of the ones with the sandcast engine, it's real rare. Old boy said that's BS they're all the same you can get em for $300 all day long. I think he was the one that even found and read the serial number out loud. They were concerned the manual said 69.9 on the back, they didn't understand that. Bwahaha!

Hey Momo, how many of your bikes are licensed and titled currently? I'm not sure about keeping multiple Hondas shod in fresh tires, good batteries and clean carbs. Not to mention the raised eyebrows when all the tags are due. I wonder if Allstate has a multiple bike discount?
The 69's carb bodies should be clean by tomorrow, they're 30 miles away at my favorite Mom and Pop bike shop. I also have parts on order so they'll probably call me when it's all ready to pick up.

Out of the 8 just 2 are licensed and insured. However, I do ride every bike that is running, albeit not legally

You can always just swap plates around. I've never had a cop verify a VIN (although I am sure they do if they see a good reason). If the plate is in your name and is for a '75 CB750 and you have it on a '70 or '78, 99.9% of cops won't know the difference. They see 750 on the side cover and you are fine.

Insurance is trickier.

I may have heard of that, of course the problem is theoretically, anyway, if you jump on your bike and forget to swap the plate back and get 40 miles from home at a restaurant before you realize you did that. you might have to park wth the rear facing the wall and ride home on back roads. Just something a friend did of course, yeah that's it. A friend did it.
My brother in law always blames it on his wife and the cop feels sorry for her. Claims it works.

Anyway the carbs are clean, the new cables and brake hose came in. I bought a 4 into 1 throttle cable just because I can still get one.

I have a funny car chassis to repair and it's got to be done by the first week in Dec. so I'm going to slow down on the 750's for a few weeks. I do need to hear this 69 run though. Somehow there will be time, just not as much.

I realized I have an original 4 cable carb top half, nice and correct length. And they do come apart. I'm going to use it and save the new one. I got the carbs on but didn't put the slides back in since I need to remove the cables in order to swap out the top. The new Stanley headlight I ordered came as a GE. I thought that was too good to be true. Anyway it's in the holder.
I posted a question about replacement wire covering, some of mine is brittle and kinked.

I ordered it just now. It would be a shame to put the handlebars back with the cracked covering. The big one going into the headlight has a nasty kink. Can't be easy on the wiring to leave it like that. Of course I got a batch of bullet connectors too. No sense waiting until I run out.

I redid the whole harness with their stuff, Don. I think it turned out pretty nice! But, I just cleaned up all the bullet connectors instead of replacing them

Looks good Greggo. I'm only replacing the connectors because they lengthened the wires for the tall handlebars. They (po)s soldered new wire on at the original connector location so I'll only loose a quarter inch of wire and the solder joints. Now it will look just like new.
I got a new harness for the 70, it came out real nice too. This bike won't need that much work. Everything on the 69 is in great shape.
I took lots of pictures of cable and wire routing.

Any tips on cleaning the sandcast cases? I used laquer thinner on a paint brush and rag to remove most of the gas stains. They don't appear to have paint on them. A brass brush maybe?

I got the wiring reterminated and connected. The new cable covering is very soft compared to the old hard covering. There would have eventually been problems if I'd left it alone. I was able to cut off the solder joints where they extended the wires for the ape hangers and put the new terminals back on. I lost 1/4 to 1/2 " of wire which left plenty of wire to make all the connections. There were no extra wires in the sandcast harness. Fuel line back on and I can hear it run. Maybe in the morning.

They are non crimped. This thing is largely non molested, I'm not used to that. It had ape hangers, a hog rim and hooker 4 into 2. The Sandcast rim was on his dragbike so I bought that too.
I wanted to clean out the oil tank, there always seems to be sediment in them. I didn't want to remove it so I used a piece of conduit and a wet vac and sucked it clean. Mythbusters tried to blow up a vac and couldn't so I assume I couldn't either.

I'm still assuming the float levels are going to be OK. I had a pro re-do the carbs. He built it from the crate in 1969 so he's experienced. L0L.

I got the new wire covering on and all the wires back to normal. The headlight bucket is easy on a sandy. No extra wires!

It runs beautifully! still on the stand with an IV bottle for fuel but it starts and sounds awesome! I prelubed it twice with pressurized fresh oil, a little choke and varoom, it oiled the top end right away. I'll be riding it soon. Ayone got any fresh sandcast tires?
