Crankcase Splitting
« on: October 02, 2009, 08:16:51 am »
My question is, do you have to remove the clutch in order to split the cases?
I've followed the manual so far, even romoving the countershaft bearing holder that the manual doesn't mention  ;) but the cases don't want to split - a small gap opens up, but I dont want to force it.
I've tried to remove the cluth centre nut but dont' have the special tool.

What do you guys think?

What bike?

Sounds like a 750 from your description.  Where is the gap opening?

Once you have all the covers off and the countershaft bearing holder removed, the cases should be ready to come apart.  Are you certain you've got all the fasteners out, top and bottom?

Oh and get a new manual if yours didn't mention the countershaft bearing holder. :)

Thanks mystic, yes it's a 750K7 with 66K miles on the clock, so in need of a refreshing!
I've just been back out to the garage and made another attempt - this time with a bit more vigour- and the cases just fell appart ;D
I have another question though, are ony of the crankase bolts captive? I ask this because the one right next to the final drive sprocket is still firmly stuck in its hole in the top casting. It rotates, obviously, but it dont want to come out!
Thanks
Steve

Nope, there are no captive bolts on the crankcase.  It probably has some hondabond stuck to it that's keeping it from pulling out.  Give it a good tug.

The same cause may have been creating your separation difficulties, sealant stuck to one of the locating dowels or the main oil passage collar.
