Back on the road!...with a massive oil leak.
« on: October 01, 2009, 01:12:14 AM »
So I took the Nighthawk for it's first ride tonight, and I have to say she fared pretty well. idled fine at ~1500, pulled nicely with just a hint of hesitation and "seeking" in 2nd, which seemed to clear up once I rode for a few miles. Pretty sure she's running lean, as she was spitting from the carbs bit at idle. All well and good, and I am pretty sure I can dial in a nice tune once I get my carbs synced and fiddle with the air screws.

Unfortunately, I now have bigger fish to fry as that bolt I helicoiled on the cylinder head cover is now spewing oil like a cut balloon. Didn't notice it until I stopped at a light and saw that my boot was SHINY with oil. When I got home the oil light was on.

When I helicoiled the bolt I didn't drill it out as there were NO threads, and it was very tight going in, and the bolt is very tough going in, almost feels like it's cross threaded...the washer is stock, and the bolt is properly torqued, but still, rivers of oil on my boot. Is there any way to end this leak once and for all? I was thinking of slathering it with liquid gasket, but I'm sure there is a more professional and longer lasting solution. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, I ended up buying an 82 CB750K petcock on ebay which is identical to the nighthawk's. Screws right on. Different part number though, which makes no sense at all.

Can you put a rubber "o" ring under the washer?
I found my PO had fitted the cam cover screws incorrectly, some are just a bit longer than others and some are then of course a wee bit shorter, after taking a few out and sorting them I got the right ones in the right holes and stopped an oil leak that was bugging me.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
