Is this piece necessary?
« on: October 01, 2009, 08:07:05 pm »
What purpose this serve on the forks? It holds the blinker bracket, but other than that its just a rust hotel on my bike. Can I leave it off and just leave the upper fork uncovered?

They're holding your headlight on too.

JC Whitney has these for about 12 bucks:

So with those $12 brackets I can get rid of the whole piece without any problems?

eBay frequently has the real thing for only a few dollars more.

I'd like to eliminate the piece all together as I won't be using the stock signals or headlight on my project.

If you have some other way to mount the headlight and signals than you don't need these at all.  Bear in mind however that sometimes Honda skimped on the chrome on the fork tubes in the area that is covered by the fork ears so you may find some rust there, but maybe not.

Those things truly suck and I would never recommend them to anyone.  I had them on my 650, sure they worked at first but then the screws would come loose and fall out, or the latch part (tab) would come out, etc.  Once the screw came out of the left one and the clamp part fell off, never to be seen again. I rode like that for a few years until I got tired of my headlight vibrating all over the place and I made some heavy duty ones that'll never give me problems.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I had them on my 750 for years without problems, of course I had lock washers under the nuts.

There are a few different ones available. If you are determined to use store bought ones, try and use a set supplied with the rubber? sleeves (minimises vibration/ shock) that go between the bracket and the tube... :)

i bought the headlight brackets like the ones you're looking at off of bike bandit.  have had them on for about 2 months now w/o any problem.  i used the 2nd holes back to mount my blinkers, and they've worked great.  and for $12, it's worth a try.  i agree that using some rubber between the clamp and the fork is a good idea...although i didn't do it myself.  ;)

if you remove them and forks are not chromed all the way up, we used to;
paint the tops

chrome the tops

 use aftermarket chromed fork tubes.

.............................................................
not sure on the 550 but on late 750s the fork was available with hardchrome all the way up.

That was my next question. It shouldn't be a problem if I removed the rust and paint the tops of the forks, correct?

Not really, just be careful when remounting things so as to not muck up the paint.

I'll take em off your hands.

What are your plans for the turn signals?

Actually, the whole setup. I have a 750K7 that needs the headlight bucket, ears and turn signals.

bud.
