Hey, guys. This is my first project, first bike actually. I recently purchased my '82 CB650 from a coworker of mine. It had been sitting in his brothers garage since 86' (assuming its the truth). It seems to be in great shape with regards to lack of rust and such. It was in somewhat running order when i picked it up other than the battery needed charged the tires are dry rotted and the front brake master cylinder was bad. It only registers a little over 7,000 miles. I purchased this baby to either bob or cafe, still can't make up my mind. This is what the bike looked like when i got it home.

There is a ding in the gas tank possibly from something falling on it.

Then I decided to do some investigating and see what shape the bike was in and four hours later i got this as a result

Now i just need an engine stand and i can yank the motor out of the frame. I guess the fun parts over and the hard part begins???

looks like you got a nice clean start, mine had years of dirt leaves and bugs.lol it would make an awesome bobber / chopper.

Those chrome airbox covers are HARD to replace, be kind with them!!

Looks to be in pretty good shape.
Have you changed the oil yet?
Anything in it that shouldn't be there(shiny flakes of aluminum)?

It seems to be in really good shape. I haven't done anything to the engine yet, was going to wait untill i pulled it and got it on an engine stand. Is there anything else i should be looking for?

I'm not sure if i'm going to put those airbox covers back on the bike. Most likely they will be posted in the for sale thread eventually, along with some other original parts.

Is there any easy way to get the swing arm bolt out of the frame? I am having a hell of a time. More pics will be posted later.

if heavy pounding and much swearing don't work it's sometimes better to get a new or second hand one and cut yours out.

I found a way to get the swingarm out without a huge amount of pounding or cutting. I went up to the local auto parts store and rented a 3 arm puller. After a half an hour of screwing with the arms, I took them off and clamped the main assembly to the frame with some C-clamps. I filled the swingarm with grease at the zerk. Put on a ratchet at the end, spun the crap out of the ratchet and Viola! Success!

Ok, now that the holidays and the month of January are over, I made the decision to hardtail and bob my 650. I have some new parts in, headlight, signals, tires, drag bars, etc. I sent the frame to a custom shop in Indianapolis that specializes in frame fabrication. I don't think my welding skills are up to the task.
Does anyone know where i can get some resized front brake lines? I am using the drag bars and have all this extra line hanging alover the place.

Ok, I got the frame back from Ardcore Choppers in Indianapolis. These guys are pretty good with metric bikes, and really helpful. Now the push to get this thing done in time for summer.

Does anyone know what size banjo bolts are used on the front brake lines? 10mm or 12mm?

Yeah, I have lots of extra parts. Both fenders, the instrument cluster, seat, turn signals, brake light, air box, rectifier/tool box brackets, etc.

my bike has been on the back burner for a while but i have made some forward progress. I had the frame powder coated. The lights are wired, for the most part. I'm waiting on the winker relay. The tank and fender recieved a rattle can paintjob, just needs some clearcoat and a good polishing.
Hopefully I can get this baby together so I can enjoy what is left of the riding season.
I have some plans this winter for her too...

Looking great, man. Our 650s are the bastard children of the CB world, so I always love to see another project. I'm also very jealous that you live somewhere where you can chop/bob it out and still get it on the street.

It does seem like our CB650s are a dirty little secret... so few and far between in the Project Shop. However, we do have 3 CB650Cs at the top of the forum now.

We're just too damm cool for school, man.

I'm not sure where you're going quite yet for the look of the bike, but the easiest way to get the jetting etc to behave and play nice seems to be leaving the stock airbox on for these old monsters. Press-in idle jets are tricky to play with and don't always agree with pods.

About the carbs...A friend of mine is lending a hand in tuning the carbs. He recommended restricting a portion of the airflow through the pods. I'll probably put some tin (soda can) inside half of the pods and see what hapens.

Just remember one thing about putting stuff inside pods: if it's not secured really well, it'll get sucked right into your carbs.

I used some JB Weld on aluminum inserts made out of some beer cans laying around. It seems to do the job. The electrical is complete and the tanks and fender are installed. There is still an issue with the accelerator pump (need a rebuild kit) and there isn't enough back pressure in the pipes, since i chopped off the baffles. Here are some updated pics

The maiden voyage yesterday around the neighborhood for an hour or so and it went well, still needs some tuning. After 5,000 RPMS the motor sputters slightly. I took it to work this morning, which is about three miles from home, and didn't make it. The caliper locked onto the rotor, thankfully i was stopped when it decided to do so. Does anyone know where i can get an inexpensive rebuild kit for the caliper, or any place to buy a refurbished caliper? any help would be greatly appreciated.
