Russ Collins Distributor

Hello all, Yesterday I purchased a nice , clean and by my judgment, trick 1973 Honda CB750 (punched out to 1000).  8) It has a Russ Collins distributor set up and I'm hoping someone can tell me more about it or can direct me to a place where I can get more information.  Here's a pic, with more pics of the bike to follow soon.

Nice score-that CB does look trick (and clean). RC Engineering has been out of the bike business for over 15 years now and that distributor came out about 30 years ago. I believe it was made by Mallory for RC. Russ Collins still has RC Engineering but he produces and modifies fuel injectors. It's basically an automotive set up that uses points. Someone here may have a copy of the original instructions. As a side note, watch out for your clutch cable- it looks like it is, or will hit, #4 exhaust pipe. Kawasaki makes a nice, simple clamp to prevent that and I could post a picture and part # if you'd like.

MRieck, Thanks for the information.  I did find RC engineering on the web and hopefully they have some information.   

Yes, I would very much appreciate any pictures and/or part numbers that you could provide regarding the clutch cable.  :)

I'm going to try to  get more pictures of the bike today.  I've restored owned (and currently own) and ridden many Yamaha RD, Suzuki GT and Suzuki GSXR models, but I'm a CB newbie  any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

Its a magneto isnt it.  Generated its own spark.

I've seen Carpy offer them once in a while on eBay, he seemed to know a bit about them. You might send him a PM...

I knew it could only be one person and I was wondering what that was all about. 

Yes I still have the RD350 and also an '84 RZ350.

I'm here because I have a '75 CB750F and the remains of 3 CB500's hopefully soon to be come 2 bikes. Nothing like what you have there. That looks like an amazing piece. Got to see the rest of the pics.

That's definitly a Mallory. It is a point set up. Here is the nice part though. They got used a lot in the OLD VW bugs and you can make it electronic for about $35 US. Makes a heap of difference. I own a lot of bugs and I use to race them with that set up. Now I am about to make a trke out of one of my old bugs that has that set up. Change it over and never worry about points again. ;D

Hi Dennis!!!  ;D ;D  Great to hear from one one of the absolute best motorcycle people I've met online.  Glad to know you still have the smokers.  I've got four myself - '75 RD350, '77RD400 and two Daytonas.  Don't know if you have been in the online two-stroke scene for a while, but most of same old knuckleheads are there along with a few new ones.

I saw this bike and I couldn't walk away.  I paid $1500.00 for it.  I don't know if it was a good deal or not - I don't really care.  Just had to have it.  8)

CAPTRON, thanks for the further information.  I'm guessing that the parts needed for the coversion are easy to come by.  I run a few bikes with points and a few with conversions.  I'll check it out.

Finally, I got a good deal!  That is a first. I really don't need another bike that I bought for a few hundred, put 3-4 thousand in it, and is now worth 1500  :)

This is kind of cool.  I sent email to RC engineering and they have no information at this point. 

Just for the heck of it, I wrote email asking to talk to Russ Collins himself about the part - to my surprise the person I corresponded with said he would be happy to talk to me and asked me to call this week.

Don't know that I've talked with a legend before.

I just can't decide if it's a distributor or a magnito ???
either way I want one!!!!!!!
the one I put on my h-d cost almost $1200...
more money than I'd put in my cb811

If you get it all figured out, would you be willing to share any drawings? You think a belt drive would work for something like this?  Seems like a good fun project to take on!

I think it's a magneto...I only see 4 spark wires...no coils
