Cd, put ya specs on,...the low tension lead can be seen over the cam box from coil to centre of the distributor, with 4 high tension leads going to the plugs. ;D

Yeah Sam,I went back and looked at the picture and you're right. I don't know that I have ever seen this setup but I did work on an old bug or VW van once in a great moon.I don't remember how they fire but I sure don't think its like an SOHC Honda.I would like to have info on that RC distributor just to know how it fires (Only one coil as opposed to two coils.) It sure as hell looks sweet though!!!

So if these distributors/magnetos were common in VW bugs, then all we need is the bracketry to fit them to our old beasties? Belt drive? Gear drive? Hmmnn, I might have to fire up the lathe and mill? ;D

ive seen that sort of gear in the period mags......all sorts of crap you could bolt to a honda4.
dizzy conversions are sorta pointless (no pun intended), but i rember a magneto setup that looked similar. just the thing for the drags........
but from a historical point of view, an aftermarket dizzy setup is just soooooooo 70's!!! more bits for the same performance!
although it looks cool. :)

 ??? If something like this is feasible with the VW distributor, what would you do for the advance mechanism? I doubt the stock VW advancer would work at the proper RPM for these engines.  Is this a  vacuum or spring-type advancer? What did RC Eng. use?  Is it rotating in the same direction for the advancer to work, once you get it adapted to the SOHC?  Too many questions I suppose....I just don't know enough about the VW dist. to figure this one out.

I just can't decide if it's a distributor or a magnito ???
either way I want one!!!!!!!
the one I put on my h-d cost almost $1200...
more money than I'd put in my cb811
1200 dollars??!!!!!,damn junkie what the hell kind of mag was it.

It is my understanding that the VW flat four distributors were electically ballanced.  If you check out the lobes on the points cam they aren't equidistant.  It's part of the reason why #3 cylinder charred from overheating before the rest did when the timing was out of whack.

I don't know if mag conversions maintained this timing arangement.

Something to think about when applying to the SOHC4.

Is that really done with the point cam? I don't know the answer,  but I thought I heard somewhere (a long time ago) that it was built into the distributor cap.
Like I said, I don't know .........
I believe that the "adjustment" retarded the timing on the #3 cylinder, again if I recall correctly.

Wasn't there a VeeDub guy on this forum?

yea back in early 90's mallery mag was mega expensive... ya really had to want one...like a did.
that set-up replaced the whole nose cone...was it worth it...nawwww...but I was cool...lol
kinda like that set-up on that honda...not worth it but tooooo cool!!

I believe only OEM VW and some aftermarket Bosch distributors ran that #3 timing retard lobe set up.

My CB runs well with a 75 Cherokee Dangerously close to running... Maybe today! Great pics. I did yell #8!^ $#!+ when I saw that setup!
