It is my understanding that the VW flat four distributors were electically ballanced. If you check out the lobes on the points cam they aren't equidistant. It's part of the reason why #3 cylinder charred from overheating before the rest did when the timing was out of whack.
I don't know if mag conversions maintained this timing arangement.
Something to think about when applying to the SOHC4.

Is that really done with the point cam? I don't know the answer, but I thought I heard somewhere (a long time ago) that it was built into the distributor cap.

I believe that the "adjustment" retarded the timing on the #3 cylinder, again if I recall correctly.
