Mileage
« on: October 04, 2009, 07:33:11 PM »
Just curious to find out what everyone else is doing. I got my 74 750k4 out today and it was showing 103 miles on my trip meter for the last tank of gas I put in it. I took off and when it hit 105miles I had to go to reserve. Is this normal?

No not normal. I get 130 miles before reserve on my K4 if I ride in a spirited way. Others seem to get more per tank but mine is pretty constant. I think you need a tune up.

good luck
Andy

Miles per tank is completely irrelevant. You could have a 2 gallon tank for all we know. Or 20.

Miles per gallon is what we need.

My '79 CB650 gets pretty between 47 to 55 most of the time unless I baby it, then I've seen 65 mpg on a few occasions.

Strangely enough my '79 CM400T gets about 50 mpg, too.

Look at the K4 in his avitar, he runs a stock K4 Tank. I think it's even the original tank that it rolled off the boat with too.

My stock tank takes 3.5 gallons just after hitting reserve. About 3.2 gallons get me 130 miles.

cheers

So that's what 40-1/2 mpg?  I wonder what the average mileage is for a 750 with stock pipes and an airbox?

1974CB750rider do you have an airbox or pods, and is that a 4:1 or a 4:2?

So you're getting about 105 miles from 3.5 gal...about 30mpg, and Andy's getting 130 from 3.5 gal...about 40 mpg.

What state of tune are you in?  I think Andy nailed it but I'll ask anyway.

What a can of worms! No mention of jet sizes, riding style, "two up" or on your own, luggage, average speed, commuting/highway use, weather conditions, etc. I recently rode one of my bikes (BMWK1100LT) on a 1500 mile ride, so for planning purposes, I did a "shakedown" ride of 500 miles earlier in the week. On that ride, I consistently averaged 60 MPG. (Imperial gallons, not those teensey weensey US gallons) With those numbers, I calculated that I could easily do 180 miles per tankfull, with another 25% in  reserve.

You can imagine my surprise when the engine conked out on the first leg after just 200 miles? Oh dear. While I washing pushing this enormous blue lump the last 3 uphill miles back to the gas station, I realized that whereas beforehand I'd been cruising at around 70 MPH with next to no luggage, on this trip I was burning up the road at an average of 90 MPH, with 30-40 pounds of luggage. After I rolled out of the gas station, I recalculated my fuel stops at the 120 mile mark, and had a great ride after that.

The best way to calculate your economy is just to fill it right up, ride it for 50 miles or so, fill it up again, and do a "miles per gallon" calculation, not forgetting all of the variables, like I did. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
