Dear Management. I jumped off my bike in our parking lot today.
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:30:21 PM »
Below is my letter to management as my manager required.  I'm fine but a little stiff feeling, the bike is fine (Honda 919) with the exception of a scuffed clutch cover and bent front brake lever.  Parking lots suck.

============================

I wanted to let you know that today while departing the parking lot on my motorcycle I had to lay my bike down and jump off in order to avoid collision with an oncoming car occupying my lane.

I left the motorcycle parking area at the rear of the building and turned right to leave the parking area.  As I neared the turn for the outermost lane, which runs along the side of the building, I saw a SUV approaching in my lane.  They were on my side of the road as they turned left towards me and proceeded directly at me.  At about 5 mph I turned right, braked, and jumped off my motorcycle to avoid a direct hit.

The SUV stopped next to me.   Then moved on just a little so they could get out of the vehicle.  My bike tires were less than 4 inches from their tires with my bike laying down on its right side.  If I wouldn't have ditched my bike and jumped off I would have been hit head on.

The driver of the car was XXX XXXXXX, and is the friend of the wife of an RHR employee.  I did get her insurance policy information and personal information.

Attached is a quick diagram of the location and moving paths of vehicles to the best of my recollection.  My path is in red.

Thank you,

Good to hear you are OK.

Post a PDF of the diagram.

As requested here's the diagram.

My travel path is in red.

I've had a couple close calls in parking lots before but nothing requiring me to jump off  ::) ::) ::)  Some folks just throw out the rules of the road when in parking lots.

You would not believe how many times I have had people cut into my travelled way cutting left hand turns short.
Luckily I stopped short for those special idiots.  ;D
For some reson a vast amount of those were driving Ford Explorers and usually had cell phones in hand, talking not paying much attention to driving.

Glad you are ok. My last accident was when a british Postman exited a one way street going the wrong way. I had to lay it down to avoid the little twat! At least the Royal Mail paid up.
