have a new set of Kenda 657 challengers 100/90/19 front and 120/90/18 rear that were bought, mounted and balanced at the honda dealer in the town nearest me. when out for the first ride today noticed a wobble in the steering around 40mph which if not looked after would start the steering head shaking. Had trued the front rim before ride but noticed the tire itself was wobbling. Stopped in at the dealer and they're not seated properly on the rim. this was told, was because of using tubeless tires on tube type rims. bike in question is a 71 cb500/four using stock rims with tubes and tires mentioned above
Is this correct or was the job just done incorrectly.

The tubeless tyre probably has a slightly different bead profile, but the right size tubeless on a tube rim shouldn't on its own ,necessarily cause a problem. Many tyre manufacturers ok these installations with the caveat that you use their tubes :-\

 I dont know Kendas, but according to what you've said, maybe their tubeless rim profiles just don't suit tube rim profiles at all.

If that's the case, the tyre outlet should have advised you of that before they sold and fitted the tyres.

they did agree to replace them for free. in reading up on tires looks like they are somewhat over-sized for the stock rims, lest the back. Placing a call to the manufacturer, Kenda to get the correct size and if tube/tubeless is an issue. thanks

A 500 should have 90/90x19 front (or MT90 x 19) and a 100/90x18 rear. It can also accept a 110/90 x 18 rear: the OEM size was right between those those, in inch (3.75 x 18). If the tire size is too wide for the rim, then it is very difficult to get the bead to seat properly.

noted in one of your posts that you suggest in keeping the numbers between front and back between a scope of 10 so would one go with the 90/90/19 and 100/90/18 rear for best handling.
going to take the tires into the honda dealer today to be reseated. if the condition persists will get the tires closer in stock size ordered in. regards

Tubeless tires will work in a tube type rim (with a tube, of course!) but the rim profiles are different - and tubeless tires are a bugger to get on a tube rim. Once actually pried over the rim lip, you have to seat the bead - difficulty varies with tire size and brand.
The procedure is pretty simple, you douse the rim and tire with tire mounting lube and remove the valve. Then pressurize the tire to a way high pressure, 60 to 80 psi. This has some dangers, so wear eye protection at least. Then let the air out, replace the valve, and spin the wheel on its axle. Most tires have a line near the bead all the way around, check that this line is the same distance from the rim edge all around the wheel on both sides. If not, break the bead off and relube then try again.
Making sure the rim flanges are clean of rust and dirt helps as well.

This may or may not bve correct, but unless your running mag wheels you shouldn't be running tubeless tires. Thats what I've been told anyway.
