Olympics in Chicago

Hard to believe the most important person in the world couldn't bring the Olympics to Chicago. I bet Oprah is really disappointed!

I especially liked the part where the conservatives were cheering the failure of Chicago's bid for the Olympics.  They must really hate America, maybe they should all just leave if they don't like it here.

Thank god the olympics went to Rio.  A town as corrupt as Chicago has no business hosting such an event and putting the taxpayers on the hook for the inevitable cost overruns.  Good riddens.

Yeah, this was pretty obvious if you were paying attention to the process.  All the other leaders were making a pitch for their countries so I suppose Obama felt he had to give it a shot.  What would have been the response if he did nothing.  They would have #$%*ed that he did not make an effort.

I think that, at least in part, the IOC was determined to show that the hosting selection wasn't about celebrity or profit.  Whether or not that's true, I think that was a factor going against Chicago.

I'm glad that South America gets a chance to host the olympics.  About time.  It's supposed to be a global thing, yes?  Not just a "rich countries" thing.

I'm a little resentful of the millions of dollars that went into the Chicago bid, that's all money down the drain that could have been spent on other things.

My favorite element of the soap opera that was the olympic bid was the (just built) natatorium they were going to tear down in order to build a velodrome.  This was to be built in the impoverished area of Douglas Park.  What a wonderful "gift" to the community.  A track designed for the use of $2K bikes no one in the community could hope to afford, versus the already popular pool that was accessible to all.  The quiet stampede of city council members buying up property they were deciding the fate of was the last straw for me and many other Chicagoans.

Nope, I would have said nothing. Dont really care for him, but dont dislike him either. I assume I am " they". I felt like we were running over there with hat in hand begging.  I aggree with the previous post that chicago did not need the burden of the olympics.
