Charging Question
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:16:57 PM »
RPMs vs charging volts.
When the headlight is on the bike will only charge at 12.6 at 3500-5000 RPM with the headlight off 14.5 to 15.
Does anyone have a chart on this... the link in FAQs is broken?
The bike will run for twenty to thirty minutes(being ridden), then the battery is dead, but sitting in the shop it is charging good.???????
Any help is greatly appreciated.

1 month old battery charged back up twice after she quit on me. Do you think that would cause the battery to be bad?

What's the headlight wattage ?....... if stock headlight is drawing-down the battery, then I would clean all connections on the charging circuit, alternator, rectifier and regulator carefully and try again....also ' brighten' the battery connections.....still the same result, may be bad battery.......

I have cleaned all connections. I will go check wattage on headlight, what should it be? I will also clean battery connections with  wire brush.

Hmmm, I would do this next....unplug the h/l with the connector and its 3 wires attached (blue/white/green ) and connect the h/l directly across the battery ( green and blue= highbeam ) and see if the voltage is still low with the bike running and revving to 4 or 5K.......if V will go to say 14v then prob. is h/l wiring..........

Measure the alternator field coil resistance S/B 5 ohms
Measure the rectifier diodes.  Are all six working?

What other mods from stock have been made?
Coils?
