Clubman or clip-on for Cafe Build
« on: October 09, 2009, 06:25:24 PM »
Hey all...wondering what the straight skinny is on clubman bars vs clip-ons for Cafes.  Most of what I've read hear, on dotheton.com and elsewhere says clip-ons.  Less painful, easier to install, etc...

However, most builds I've seen on here seem to have clubman bars.  What the verdict?

If I didn't love the headlight ears as much as I do... clip-ons.

Clip-ons are way more legit. But clubmans are cheap (and easy) and seem to have the magical property of turning a relatively stock bike into a caaahhhfaaay...  ::) ;D

I take no sides in this battle, I have a set a clubmans on my 550  ;D for now

Just to add fuel to the fire, The most confident feeling bars handling wise, that I have ever had was a set of euro bars.

Clubmans will have a slightly more aggressive feel as they will push you slightly further forward in your stance. They "Look" the pat a bit more. I put clip ons on my last cafe bike and will be running clip ons on the bike I am working on now.

It really becomes a personal, and comfort choice (not that either are truly comfortable).

Link? I could not find them on the site.

Never mind, found them. Bet they would sell more off their website if people could find them easier...

cyclexchange has clip ons that mount under the fork tube top nuts. if i ever ran another clip on i'd likely go with those.

Holy heck! Those are great! So you could keep the stock ears with these it looks like but whatever angle they're at is all you get? Maybe I'm not visualizing them mounted very well.

Ha...I have trouble visualizing a lot of this stuff.  I'd really like it if more places had easy to find instructions on clubman/clip-on installation.

I've not had either on a bike yet so I can't say anything to comfort/ease of install but clip ons look the part much better than clubmans. Clip ons, some nice brakets and a clean top triple...?  :o

I'll be putting clip ons on my cafe build for sure.

i've had both on my k4 750. clubmans let the control housings bang the tank, but i felt like the clip-ons were too far forward

I think that bolt in there also functions as the top triple tree clamp bolt?

On my 750 i did drag bars, then clipons but they hit my tank so i went to clubmans, hated them went to a different set of clipons mounted above the triple tree. Hate the way the bike handles and i cant ride long distance like that. so now im back to drag bars. I will be putting my clipons on my 550 when i do the cafe to that one. Comfort or looks? you cant have both. My final opinion is Stock is comfy but clip ons look really good.

Those look really nice.  I'm hoping to get a setup with barend mirrors on my.  I think some models of those look really slick.

I got clubmans on my bike and loved them till I went to our local bike night and saw a cb750 with clip on and well fell in love with them when I rode the bike.  I will be doing clip ons for sure when I rebuild my bike.
Keep it shinny side up.

They look to be Dunstalls or Dunstall copies. I had a set of original Dunstalls on my CB 750, but they wouldnt transfer over to my GL front end. The Dunstalls had a weird angle to them, but worked fine. When I changed the front end over, I put on a set of adjustable Raask clubmans. After I put the Raask bars on, the Dunstalls were very uncomfortable in comparison. The "V' angle of the Dunstalls had were a lot sharper than the Raask bars have.

Whoa. That's a pretty steep angle. I think my wrists would start barking after an hour or so turned out like that.

The clubs I have on mine now are fine - I just wish they were about an inch higher with the same rake. About the same spot clip-ons mounted under the triple would put them I think.

Good to hear about the GL front end...can I ask why they didn't work with the GL1000 front end? I'm going to be putting that front end on my project build and was going to use a cheap set of euro bars for now...planning to do clipons at some point...but now that might not be an option?

The CB top triple tree has 1 "squeeze" bolt per side(on the outside of the fork tubes) that clamps on to the fork tubes and this is where the Dunstalls mounted to. The GL has 1 allen "squeeze" bolt that is on the inside of the fork tubes (towards the steering stem). The GL top tree is also alot wider than the CB top tree.

There's a better pic of a set of Dunstalls clip ons(or style) mounted on a bike in the "projects section". I cant find it, but its the cafe bike with a large sissy bar on it.
The Dunstalls weren't too bad to ride with when I didn't have the Raask bars to compare them to.

I like the adjustability of the Raask bars, They can be adjusted to suit almost any rider.
