Rijeka 2009 impressions
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:09:34 PM »
some infos and pics to share:
one of the most interesting bikes: Yamaha TR1
a winner bike, 185kg, 100 rear wheel hp and a highly skilled driver.
remarkable the ultra modern frame design, something like a main tube made from sheet metal holding the steering tube and the engine together, engine works as a stressed member, and a tiny swing arm holder attached to the rear of the engine. swing arm suspension via cantilever.
the bike/rider combo had the poleposition, my garmin GPS attached to the bike stored a 223km/h peak Vmax.
unfortunately the bike DNF due to electrical? issues

here our race guzzi, this is the bike we raced at Spa-Francorchamps at the bikers classics.
the bike is a little bit on the heavy side, but powered by a strong engine, however due to oil consumption the engine needs an overhaul this winter.
Vmax in rijeka 208km/h

second picture is a guzzi lemans, modified engine with 85 rear wheel HP, this engine did 205km/h

from a technical point of view, here is maybe the most interesting bike. it belongs to a wellknown racer here in austria.
the bike is a benelli. i do not know the origin of the engine, maybe its a honda crankcase, maybe not. the owner says the bike is in the 500ccm displacement and is build to the original benelli works specifications.
remarkable is the dohc head, dry clutch and the ignition positioned in front of the engine where usually the oil filtercase can be found.
according to the riders statements the engine delivers 87hp on the crankshaft.
fastest GPS measured Vmax was 205km/h
from what i saw, the bike performed more than well

that TR1 is a nice, unique looking bike.

very nice stuff MEC

its crazy, those TR1's were once regarded as the most boring 80's bikes, look what some love can do to them! A sort of poor man's britten. 100 hp? 50 hp from each 500 single cylinder? Good as a highly tuned G50? Oh yes...... regardless of HP, very very nice project.

The 500 benelli looks like a kawasaki Z500 top end on a CB500 bottom (or benelli 500/4 copy, guess you know those), interesting..... but if Honda was getting 85 from the GP works four with 16 valves, 87hp form a home made "benelli" is a bit exaggerated.

in general, looks like tuners like to shoot high hp figures, no?  :)

ok, saw those 18" Z6... not sizes that are usable on my 500.....

+1 TG

more beauties:
Segale Kawa, suspected to have 1260ccm and +140HP.
the bike in perfect condition, look at the titanium exhaust!!

#23 another Segale. this bike has been bought at 30€ and restored. now it has 1200 wiseco, yoshi Stage 2 cams, 33cr.
the carbs had been a bit on the rich side resulting in less top speed than my sohc :)

we go on with twins.
harley, one of the most beautiful bikes in rijeka. the bike seemed to have very short oil change intervalls. during the race it performed very well however. surprisingly for me that the chassis proved its drivability on the track.

first pic: an ultrafast BMW, always good for a win. i doubt if it weights more than 150kg raceready.
once a racer said: i prefere to have 20kg less than 20HP additional.

Heh, most of the unneeded engine case was removed on that beemer. Good way to lose weight, for sure.
Both lovely bikes.

nice beemer and XR too,

got to say that the wickedest 1200cc Beemers I ever saw belong to illmberger, a german guy, so fast they are scary! They put him on the same class as the 500's some years ago in Adria and i stopped counting the times he lapped me at one point....

look at the angle of the engine....

back to your tire question, Avon AM23's (also 160-18) will alst a few races, not just one, expensive though

600 TT2, oh yeah, that's a really old wet dream of mine

shame that building a good racing Duc is so expensive.

Verllichi frames and body parts are still made around here, just in case you have the dosh to build a replica.

I think the black guzzi is missing the rear wheel..... ;)

1:43 is fast indeed,

when my friends did the endurance race there, best lap was 1:44 and that was by an open class 1100cc bike!

Those G50's are still extremely fast, no wonder people were racing them well into the seventies, but you need a rider who never touches the brakes.

Cool vids mec. It's nice to get a glimpse of some different machinery we don't usually see in North America.
