cb 750 oil ring
« on: August 11, 2009, 09:05:24 PM »
Bought this 72 cb 750 , guy i bought it from "rebuilt" it . I could tell it had all new gaskets in it and it was cheap enough. It was not rideable as it was apart and he was only using frame to hold engine to run. He said it was using lots of oil, he also said he left expanders out of oil rings???? So me and my 5 year old and my almost 2 year old told the engine down and found that 3 of 4 cyl's had the compression rings were almost lined up, not at 120 degree apart also had 1 piece oil ring, not a 3 piece oil ring set. He had given me the box rings came in, hastings 6971 in it were a wave type expander? looks like stock pistons he cleaned up and decent hone on cylinders. I have not been able to mic bores or pistons yet. My question is are these supposed to be 3 piece oil ring? Are the 1 piece rings  an upgrade and if so do these wave like expanders go behind 1 piece oil ring? Once i know for sure standard bore, should i order oem oil rings? ring gap was roughly 15 thousands book says less than 28 thou ok , what is min. ring gap? Thanks in advance, leaving with family camping, check in later.

You cant get just oil rings you have to buy piston sets. I have no knowledge of Hastings as they aint found in UK but I'm sure somebody on here will give you an opinion
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Early bikes had 1 piece oil ring later ones 3 piece.

I've been told that the 3 piece are better, and I used them instead of the 1 pc on my recent successful rebuild.

No

Yes the original 72 oil ring is a one piece 3 in 1 call it.
If you order new honda rings youll get the 3 pc oil ring now I just put a set in.
