Review of X-Eleven Shoei Helmet
« on: October 12, 2009, 10:12:31 AM »
I recently acquired a X-Eleven Shoei helmet - a top of the line $550 helmet (and no I didnt pay anywhere near that price). It has loads of vents and is very aerodynamic and all seemed to be good. Until yesterday - riding in the low 40`s -low 50`s all day for 10 hrs made my head very cold. This was with the vents ALL closed (3 vents - mouth guard vent, vent above visor and 2 vents on frontal lobe). It seems that the problem is with cold air coming up under the chin and hitting the mouth vent (inside) and this funnels air through the rest of the helmet. Researching the issue last night there are reports of the chin curtain helping with preventing too much air coming up. Will try this next.

BTW - this would be a great helmet for summer...

Anyone else have this cold-weather problem with their helmet and if so did you fix it? I was also thinking of wearing a helmet liner next time....anyone do this?

cheers
Andy

I have a polypropylene balaclava for when I am riding at near freezing temps, it makes a lot of difference.

I noticed quite a big difference with the chin curtain on my RF-1000.  Only problem is that now your breath can really fog up the visor depending on the humidity.  The helmet came with a "breath guard" that acts to shield your breath from the area above the nose, but i can't seem to find the )#@? thing to try it out.

You got the 11 on closeout somewhere?  The RF-1100 and X-12 are out and are significant improvements (esp the RF-1100) over the previous models.

I'm waiting on the 1100 to land here so I can try them on.  My RF-1000 is shot since I crashed it a few months ago.  From what I've read, the 1100 is an amazing helmet.

So clue me in.....What do you get for the extra $170 that a X-11 costs over a lets say ...  HJC sy-max II helmet. I was looking at that one cause it is fiberglass and modular and has a built in sunscreen.
