Easy way to properly adjust my headlight
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:31:09 PM »
I think my headlight needs a little adjusting.  The left/right angle seems fine, but I think the light is not pointed down enough.  What is an easy way to properly adjust my headlight I could do in my driveway?

Grab ahold of the top and give it a push (or pull).  If it's not too tight, you can "wrestle with it" to adjust it.  Technically, you're prolly 'poseda loosen the bolts that hold it, adjust, and re-tighten.  In terms of height, I'm sure there's a recommendation... someone will chime in with how far in front of the bike the light is supposed to be "on" the pavement.

Thanks!  Yes, what is a way in my driveway, I can properly check the beam's downward angle to make sure it is right for maximum lighting while riding at night.

+1, I adjust mine while riding. Bolts are tight enough to keep the headlight in place, but loose enough to allow for fiddling.

Just get on the road, put low beam and move the headlight up and down until you find the perfect spot where it illuminates enough part of the road and with enough intensity, and then switch to high beam and check that now it is further ahead where the light is going to. Too high and the high beam will illuminate the sky not the road. Too low and the low beam will illuminate the front of your bike, something that is not desirable because you don't ride looking your front wheel.

Obviously, you need some balance to tilt your body to the front of your bike and steer with one hand while you adjust the headlight with the other hand. Do it under your own responsability.

I'll agree with the other posters, you've gotta set your headlight angle while out on the road on a dark night.  There is no substitute.
