Quick spark test question

If I have everything connected correctly (coils, ignition, etc), then kicking the engine over with a spark plug removed from a cylinder and touching the engine should result in a spark, right?

Yup, just remove one and lay it along the motor so it earths, no spark means you have missed something.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

True, but using the kicker will make it harder to see the spark. Do it in the dark with a buddy keeping an eye on the plug gap.

Awesome. Also, do I need to have the battery, rectifier, etc. hooked up as well or can I start testing w/ just the ignition system hooked up?

The battery must be hooked up!  The alternator won't produce any current without the battery setting up the electrical field in the windings (unlike some other bikes and lawnmowers).  If some parts of the charging system are not hooked up just make sure the points and coils are getting 12V.  It should spark even if turned over slowly.
