What are cafe seat molds made from?

I was thinking about making one, can they be made from fired clay?

A lot of people use a hard foam to cut and shape the seat and then lay the fiberglass on that. 

Doesn't clay shrink a little when fired?  It seems like that would throw off your dimensions and mounting points for the seat pan.

I think you can make it from just about anything you want i.e. wood, foam, other fiberglass. you just have to make sure they don't stick by lining it with plastic or something. good luck

So just make the seat from foam and then add the fiberglass over top? Sounds simple enough ;D

The OP might interested in a permenant mold for larger production. So, the one-of techniques like foam, etc might not work for him.

If I were going to do something for production I'd probably get a mold CNCed out of super dense REN foam. We use it at work for vac-form molds and they hold up beautifully.
