Canadian guys...parts suppliers?
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:21:44 AM »
Hey guys,

For all you Canadians out there, where do you order your parts from? I'm rebuilding my '72 750K2, and I need to order a lot of little tid-bits from the microfiches. I've requested a quote straight from Honda and I'm waiting for them to get back to me, however I'm certain the price will be steep. Do any sites exists like Babbitt's for us Canadians? Babbitt's is ridiculous when it comes to shipping, on top of the fact that they only ship UPS...which is really the worst way for us.

Thanks!

Welcome. what part of Canada are you in?

PartsNmore is a CDN company.  I have always had great and fast service from them.

Never ever use UPS to bring stuff into Canada, unless you want to pay about $35 for them to do the paperwork.

Most vendors are happy to send via regular US postal service.

Try your Honda dealer first.  I have been surprised several times by what they can get.
I got my intake boots and carb boots from them for less than they were selling for on ebay.

My brake piston seal was only $5.

Hey Toxic,

Thanks for the reply. I'll check out PartsNmore. That's good news about your intake and carb boots because I requested both! lol!

I'm in Ottawa as well actually...so I'm assuming Powersports is where you did business?

To any Canadians reading this, I just got my quote back from Honda and I have to say, I'm very pleased. Some of their stuff was even cheaper than Babbitt's and Ebay!

BigBoi,

I don't try to fiqure out why but often our prices on OEM parts will be less than our southern neighours. Arm yourself with part numbers before going to your Honda dealer and the parts man will be your best pal.

Find a small bike repair shop, they will have all the aftermarket catalogues and you can piggyback shipping when they order parts from the same supplier and same some dough.

If you know someone close to the border in the US, have them accept your parts (and you can reciprocate) and declare the stuff yourself when you return to Canada. Often Can. Customs don't bother charging me for parts under a c-note....bonus.

I ran about 9 part numbers past the local Honda dealer ..
8 were available thru Vancouver and one from Eastern Canada, none of the prices seemed as high as I was expecting..

I'll pile on to the endorsement for Canadian Honda dealers. I have been rebuilding a CB750K engine and I needed lots of bits many of which came from Honda and the prices were as good as or even better than buying on the web.  Don't ask them to look anything up for you, their national parts computer system cuts off at 1979 so the SOHC4 is not in there. I look the parts up online and then ask the local parts guy to give me the price and availability, which he can do on his system, but he can't tell me the part number of the whatever that goes in my 78 CB750.

I am absolutely new to the forum but it is a nice welcome to see other Canadians posting on the site.  I have always wondered about parts and I never really bothered checking at the dealership.  Ive got a 78 750F that has been a daily driver but this winter its going to get a few upgrades.

Honda Canada has been really great at not dumping old parts, and some stuff is still available new from Japan too!
The problem, as mentioned, is getting the number looked up. The "official" online system doesn't know much about life before 1980 or so. Before Honda dropped it's independent dealer network and took over with their "everything Honda sells" dealers most shops had been around for decades and usually had some parts books on shelves from before the microfiche system came into use around 1970. They would definitely have every fiche they had ever been issued!
Times have changed.
The computer inventory is excellent however. If a part has been superseded the system should show the new number. It will also show if parts are obsolete but still in stock - that's when you order a few extra for the future because when stock runs out you're going to be dealing with CMSNL or David Silver and their prices are usually nuts.

Try using a site like bike bandit to see the part and its number . I take the number to my Honda dealer near me in Milton and they order it . If Bandit doesn't show it you generally can't get it through Honda but Cnsml Dss Might have it . My big wish is for 2 new in the box oil pumps for my 750,s . So far no joy .

Hmm, that's odd. Scona Cycle Honda here in Edmonton has a computer system that goes back much further. Mind you, they have been around since 1968.

Doesn't bikebandit only list their part numbers whick don't co-relate to actual Honda part numbers?

I know if I punch in the Honda part # it will take me to the bikebandit part.

Are the part number listed on their site actual Honda number?

I know that if I use Motogrid       http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx     and search the numbers I can just take them to The local(Bowmanville)Honda dealer ,they just ordered with the numbers I give them, they do check first,I have gone in to the dealership and I have ordered through the Internet, both ways worked for me.....But I did notice that the prices from Bowmanville Honda were more then from Motogrid, even with currency exchange ,but I got the parts quick

That's the Peterborough shop that was being referred.  I've been there too - they are now the importers for the Ural line of motorcycles/sidecars.  The "salvage" side of their business is more of a junk yard, so expect to do some rummaging to find anything.

Regarding the comments regarding Honda as source for NOS parts: yes, its a good place to check with the part numbers in hand.  Some items are still available from them.  It was originally Soichiro Honda's policy to continue keeping full stock for all models ever sold in a market area.  This meant that if Honda had sold a CB77 model (as they did) in Canada, then all the parts for it would be stocked in their Canadian warehouse forever after.  Back in the late 1980's I actually went to the local Honda dealer to buy a part for my CB77 that had not been sold for over 20 years.  Sure enough, Honda had the part and the dealer repeated the policy of Mr Honda.  Soichiro died sometime later and the company policy seems to have been reviewed by the accountants.  I personally know someone who late in the 1990's actually witnessed the supervised crushing of countless parts as they were consigned to scrap by the bean counters.  It made him weep as he saw pristine tanks, fenders and other body parts get mangled into mere scrap.  Rest well Soichiro; we will continue the dream...and remember.
