Engine Paint looks great Cliff.  Did you use VHT paint?  Any plans to cure it in the oven?

The paint is Duplicolor 1615 Aluminium engine paint. I haven't talk to the wife about using the oven but i suspect a quick short answer would come back. I left the cases out in the sun for quite awhile and as a friend pointed out, when the engine is running it will cure the paint. I didn't think of that.

I wouldn't put them in the oven, at least not too hot.  I just pulled a head that I dropped off for some valve work.  It was painted with the same paint.  They heated it to 350 degrees F. to replace the exhaust valve guides and it turned the paint to a golden color.  That's way hotter that the engine will ever see so I'm not too worried.  They bead blasted it and I'm going to repaint with the same paint.

Got the cylinders and head painted today and "lettered" the K1 switch for the other bike.

A step forward and a step backward. Assembled all the parts in the upper and lower cases, smeared Hondabond on the machined surfaces (the Hondabond is runny but the tube is about 5+ years old), mated the them, installed all the bolts, installed the shifter assembly and.........................it won't shift. The shifter fork must be jammed. Take it all apart, but leave the shifter assembly on the lower case and sure enough the shifter fork is stuck. The cases did mate cleanly though. Get that fixed but now I have to remove the dried on Hondabond which means taking everything out of the cases to be sure there's no bits of the bond staying/hiding in the cases. And I think I should get some new bond. The jammed fork may have saved me from grief later as the Hondabond seems to have dried hard and not semi dry as the tube says.
My buddy "Do It Again Cliff" has come back. The cases did look good bolted together though.

Kenn, the rabbit hole has no bottom, it's a great place though!
FunJimmy, yes I feel better about it now. The local shop recommended Permatex Ultra Grey  RTV Gasket Maker (No. 82194) instead of the HondaBond. It's half the price and goes on nicely. I used my finger to smear on a nice light spread of it taking care to wipe off any excess on the inside of the case. It stays wet for a longer time and is nice to work with. I got the two halves joined and made sure the shifter works. I took more care in making sure the shifter fork went where it was supposed to, maybe too much of a rush last time. It shifts through the gears nicley and there's just a tiny bit of sealer showing at the case joint so it should be good.

Great job.

I suggest to check also if all the gears work well before you put your engine in the frame. I made a huge mistake by mounting the fifth gear in the wrong direction, what resulted in an idle tuning fifth gear. Now I have to take the engine out of the frame, open the cases again to turn on the gear wheel. That's a tough job with a fresh painted frame...

I've ordered from these guys counteless times.  Good service and quick delivery. They did send me the wrong ignition once after I confirmed the one I needed.  I have to send it back.  A lot of their stuff is reproduced in Taiwan though.

Thanks, I wasn't sure about them but another SOHC4 friend has and felt it was good product. The order hasn't arrived yet. I did buy a set of K0 carbs for the sandcast motor from a forum member so the sc will make a nice display engine in my man cave until a frame comes along that I can afford.

It's 1:05 am and I've just managed to strip the threads out of one of the cam carrier bolt holes. Dammit! Time for bed. Got the new piston rings on, installed the cylinders and the head, almost done and ................ bolt went in a little ways and just snapped. Took it apart, removed the broken off piece and used a new bolt, then it wouldn't tighten. Ratz!

Better day today. My friend Rick came by and we - he- did a helicoil for me and it's all good. Reassembled the top end, set the valve clearance, installed the starter motor and put it away for the night. Next is to have the engine cases polished by the end of the month. Then take the sandcast motor out of the K0 frame and put the right motor back in.

Thanks Johnie! Rick will be glad it's the motor and not him that's PURDY! I'm going to have to learn how to do Helicoils for myself soon I think.
I bought a set of K0 carbs from a forum member for the sandcast motor. It will look good on a stand with a spotlight shining on it. My first piece of modern art.

Worked on an incomplete set of K0 carbs today. Stripped down, black paint removed and cleaned up. There's another thread about clean engines saying his carbs were soda blasted and they look great. I'm going to have to find someone here to do that.

I would have waited and turned the engine on its side, and then lifted the frame over it.
Putting the engine in after the frame is all assembled seems more difficult.

You're right. I'll have to take some stuff off to make the frame lighter. I have a couple of volunteers that will help lift and lower-young guys with strong backs. When the die cast motor is completely ready to go I'll get the bike ready for a quick motor change.
When I got the sand cast motor I thought it would be great to be able to show it in the bike but have decided that the correct motor (the one it came with) should be in the frame. The sand cast motor can wait for another opportunity. It's rebuilt and runs fine so it will be ready for action when the time comes. Meanwhile it will also look great on the bench.

Been busy cleaning and polishing since it's just time consuming and good mindless work to enjoy. I purchased a second set of K0 carbs fom a forum member (thanks John) and waiting for a set of carb springs and tops that I found on eBay. A friend of mine has a small sand blaster he'll lend me (see shiny carbs thread) so I'll try soda blasting the carb bodies if my small compressor is up to it. Also installed a set of covers of the K0 engine just to protect it. The covers need polishing too which should happen next month. My business is slow right now so progress is slowing down a bit. If I stopped buying extra stuff I would probably be much further ahead but it's hard for me to pass up a good find.
By the way, the plastic boxes are from the fishing department at Walmart at $5 or so each. A great way to organize things.

The carbs turned out looking good.  You don't happen to know of a source for the brass stop nuts on the top?  I'm missing two of the little buggers.
