clutch slips when cold
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:41:32 PM »
hello been sorting out the kinks on my newly restored 71 cb500.
the clutch has been slipping when first starts out, running up through the gears applying  power. starts in around 3 and 4th.
have been turning in the clutch adjuster on the bars on the fly each time it has happened. twice.
the condition goes away once the bike has heated up further.
the clutch has the square cut corks but had been setting for 10-15 years.
they seemed new with little wear to faces of cork.
does this condition fade once the bike has more use? or part of the charm?
the bike shifts well, doesn't drag the clutch at idle and finds neutral.
thanks keith

That is a beauty, I would adjust per the manual and ride it some.  Maybe an oil was added that had antfriction additives that messed you up.  I use Rotella or Honda oil to avoid issues with the clutch.

most likely the adjustment on pushrod is too tight.
plates wear down and take up 'slack'
When case/basket/ OUTER COVER heats up it gives few thousandths of inch clearance.(moves operating mechanism away from pressure plate)
Adjusting cable wont be any real help

when dealing with the clutch section after replacing the primary chain, there was an extra ball bearing found in between the clutch push rod and the peace clutch.
the push rod was in two sections which looked right for there was a machined looking surface between the two pieces. but found out is not right.
the bearing isn't supposed to be there either. the easy fix I  was told for worn peace clutch push rod combo.
will get the correct parts this winter but wanted to get a few rides before the snow sets in.
will backing off the clutch adjuster some take care of the slight tightness causing the slip before the bikes fully warmed?
Lots of things on the list for this winter. handling issues mostly.
