NOS gasket usage... yes or no
« on: October 14, 2009, 06:44:17 PM »
Hey all,

While shifting through the basement the other day I found an unopened set of Vesrah gaskets for the trusty old CB750. They were on the top shelf in the fruit cellar and had about an inch or so of dust on it. As far as I can tell nothing was set on them and they appear to be sealed. Could these be used or should they be chucked? If I were to guess I would say they are around 35 years old. I am leaning towards buying a new set as it is better to be safe than sorry, but who knows!

I also found what appears to be a complete set of oil seals but I am sure that those are shot. Sealed or not I really don't want to trust 35 year old rubber.

see no reason why they should not be used, and the seals in the bikes are 35 years old so why should the new ones not be OK?

Well, because the ones in the bike are leaking and need to be changed, obviously.   :D ;D ;)

I wouldn't take the chance on a 750.  Mainly just because I don't enjoy pulling the engine any more often than absolutely necessary.

I don't know that you can count on OEM ordered from a Honda dealer being any newer. I'm sure some of it is, but I've had "new" seals come in packaging that looked like it had been on the shelf for a number of years. If it's in good shape, I'd use it.

The seals were the big iffy part. I mean they have been sealed so very little oxygen and they haven't been a roasting in an engine so I would assume they are fine. However these seals are pretty cheap to purchase brand spanking new. To be perfectly honest both sets are 'cheap' when you consider the time and energy to take out and tear down an engine if/when one fails. I've been on the fence using them ever since I found them for the same reasons. Sure they look fine and they have been sealed for 35 years but do I really want to chance it...

oldfett,

do not chuck them....if you are not going to use them, I can put them to use as templates and then return them to you. Laser cut new ones for anyone that needs them for a fraction of the cost of nos. Let me know what u r going to do.

Well I may use them as the consensus is they are fine. However if other people want some of your gaskets cut with a "laser" (in an Austin Powers context) I can always ship em to you.

that would be cool...no harm will come to them...just use them to create a digital pattern and ship them back to you.

Well I'm away at school right now so it will be a month before I could ship them out, if you can wait that long. What kind of material are the gaskets made out of and how much do a set of yours cost. I'm sure others would be interested too!

You don't need to go to honda for seals. You can get them from a seal or bearing shop. New, cheap, top quality.

that's OK, no big rush. It depends on how much time and material it takes to produce. usually try to cut the largest and put as many of the smaller inside. I have done cork, and rubber. speciality requests. have not done any for bikes yet, so this will be a first and I can't think of a better place to start than for the 750.

If I were you, i would use the head gasket with no worry. Regarding the seals, it would depend on their shape. Have a close look at them, if the rubber is still plyable and they look good, go ahead. As you say, if they are cheap you can always buy new ones if only for peace of mind.

But you already knew that didn't you?   ::)
