You mean new bikes? What about Triumph? They've got the Bonneville, the Thruxton, and the Scrambler...

And you need a reason to go for a ride..?..... ;D

I was going to mention the Triumphs as well, they are very popular down here in Aus, pity there aren't many manufacturers making these style of bikes, i think they would sell well anywhere..

The selection of modern standards is limited, but how about Ducati's Sport Classic GT1000, or Moto Guzzi's V7 Classic, and the V7 Cafe`? 8)

With the endless sea of "Wild Hog" types, and Ricky Racer wannabees, you can bet the Cruisers, and crotch rockets aren't going anywhere, but there is a rapidly growing trend for modern versions of the standards many of us grew up with. Offerings from manufactures will only trickle in unless the market makes a dramatic change. If it ever does, hold onto your ass, new versions of 50 year old bikes will likely cost as much as a frigging car. :(

What's 50 miles?  So what?  What is a Triumph going to need, anyway?

Yamaha FZ6 is a nice bike
Used Bandit 600
W650 is older but still bulletproof
80's era BMW
MotoGuzzi Breva 750
Those new Guzzi V7 Classics are absolutely swell.  Terrific bikes.

Royal Enfields are kind of like Urals;  they get the job done, but they're not for everyone.

retro bikes are cool but, well, retro. might as well get the real thing. it seems like there need to be more standard type bikes or bikes that aren't just the 2 mentioned common variants. motorcycles can be so much more. utilize modern technology as in frame using engine as stressed member, modern brakes, fuel injection, etc. but put it all together in a different package than the ones we are so sick of.

I like this idea from BMW:

I've got a 2004 Triumph Tiger that I love and my dealer is about 120 miles away.  Not that it ever really needs anything.  Bring it in maybe once a year for work I don't feel like doing myself, take bikes out for demo rides while I'm there.  The Scrambler is really neat.  So is the Street Triple.

Suzuki Bandits and V-Stroms are great bikes and you can find deals on them if you look.

Yamaha FZ series?  Big power, upright ergos.

I wish Honda sold the Varadero in the USA.  Love that engine.

+1 on Triumph.  The new Bonnevilles are the only real standards I can think of on the American market.  Even the Ducati SportClassics have a pretty aggressive riding position.  The Royal-Enfield thumpers look nice, but I've heard reliability isn't the best.  Saw a guy on the streets of Santa Fe once kicking his Bullet over again, and again, and again.  Never did see him ride away.

A lot of manufacturers have done the "naked" bike thing... most obvious is the Ducati Monster, but there are others as well.  I learned to ride on a Suzuki GS500E, which was a decent looking bike - no fairing, but a sporty frame.  I'd feel bad for a passenger, though, since the seat kept sweeping up as it went back.

Rumors abound about Honda's new CB1100F coming to the U.S.  It's a good looking bike - lots of pics on the forum.

I like the BMW R1200R, but the price tag is definitely up there.

The K's are definitely nice bikes, but I'm not completely on board with the styling.  It gives me a mutant-cyborg vibe.  I certainly wouldn't turn one down, but if I had one I'd secretly worry that it was going to come alive and murder me.

Plus, I have a soft spot for the boxer engines.  Don't know why, really.  I just like them.  A Ural would be lots of fun...

I would say you either have the dual sport market (BMX, kawa, buell), replica\off take of old (ducati, Moto Guzzi) or the street fighter markets (speed triple or XB12 lightning).

Theres a good 10+ bikes to really choose from...

I sat on a Suzuki V Strom 650 today at the dealer.  I kind of like the seating/peg/bar arrangement.  There are bags available from the dealer or from aftermarket companies (I am not sure about the dealer).  And the rear is ready for a top box or other form of luggage.

How about a used ST1100 or ST1300 if you want to cover some distance and have 150k mile reliability?

There are almost always some KZ1000 Police bikes in the craigslist for major cities.  Kawasaki kept making these until 2005 or so which means there are plenty of parts around.  These would probably be good "around town" or short distance machines.

The GS850 Shaft, KZ1100 shaft or 1000cc Concours all are shaft driven and would make good long distance machines.  How about any 90's GPZ1100?  By most accounts they were more comfortable than some of the repli racers.

Can you tell I have been thinking about an addition to my stable?

IF you wanted to drive 4 hours and IF you could get the dealer to come down on the price, I know where there is a BRAND NEW '07 red/white/blue VFR Interceptor still on the showroom floor.

Otherwise you could wait for Honda's CB1100 to come out next year.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I was just going to say this. I'm wondering what handling and performance will be like. Honda usually delivers, but I'm sure I'll have to wait a few years to pick one up used...

I have yet to see anything that says the CB1100 will be available in the U.S.  I'm not saying it isn't going to happen, but it seems to me that if it were they would be trying to drum up some more interest about it in the states.
