timing on a 74 550 four???

hi all new i did a search and found you guys and from the looks of it this is the place to be ,..but any way i just was trying to time the cam with the crank and i belive the  the cam mark should be horizontal to the surface of the head with the crank showing t1-4 ,..but now the ???s on the crank at the t 1-4 mark there are 2 marks on ether side of the t and 4 writings on the plate so witch mark on the crank do i use and where do i put the mark on the cam??? any help ,..thanks

Welcome to the forum! :)  You definitely found the right place. 

Before you get started working on your bike I highly suggest getting a maintenance manual for your bike.  You can download one for free if you look in the thread at the top of the SOHC/4 Bikes page.  Among other things, it will explain in detail how to correctly align the camshaft with the crankshaft.
