putting my motor back together and realised there are no bolts/nuts to hold the barrel down until the head goes on? obviously no one uses gasket goo on the base gasket huh? cheers, Dave

Correct, the head holds the cylinder down.
No goo on the base gasket! Or any other gasket really. Others may feel differently but that's what I do and it's always served me well.

A touch of Aviation Sealer or 1099 on the puck disks is all I use.

Nothing at all, for gaskets that may move a dab of grease to hold it in place.
