I need to get new plugs for a proper plug chop.  I could only wipe off prior deposits, they still seem to be lightly black and dusty

Brett, do you think the advancer may have been stuck/sticky when you took it apart ? If so, you may have timed the bike ( before lube the adv'er ) with the cam turned partways towards full advance....i.e., might need to re-time or check with a timing light would be best.....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Possibly, I hit it with the timing light this afternoon.  I'm at a stand still because I can't move my points plate any further to get the timing spot on.

That's a common problem with non-Honda points....Hondaman talks about it on a post...only solution is to file the three slots out to get the timing to advance/retard to match the 'F' mark.......or order Honda points.
