any miata owners here?
« on: October 17, 2009, 10:12:36 PM »
i got a 1st generation miata offered to me for free if i drag it off the barn owners property. they kicked the step-son out a few years ago and he never came back for the car. roger got the title this past week, so thats not a problem. it's been sitting in a dirt side yard for about 3 years so it's pretty crusty. i've been thinking about building a monster miata with it.

i have a decent 5.0 litre ford roller cam block in the garage, just needs to be taken out ".030 and a t-5 in need of new input shaft bearings, as well as a good bellhousing. i dont know if i want to mess with a miata or do a hot-rodded air cooled bug when the money starts coming in. the miata is in no way even close to being drivable or even running as it sits.

It sure doesn't fit 6'plus -footers, but I'm 5'10" and I loved it.  That engine is bullet-proof.  Shifts great.  A true sports car- which may be a problem for many.  It is much roomier than a Midget, but has about the same cabin space as a TR3 or MG.  Unlike those cars, it has decent heat and air, roll-up windows and luxurious things like that.  Trunk space holds a sandwich and a thermos.  Just like the other real sports cars.  You either like that or you don't.

However- having driven in the mountains quite a bit, I have a strong suspiscion that a bigger/heavier lump could easily overwhelm the tyke.  Maybe with a really heavy-duty suspension... But also, there's not much room to put something bigger in there, I don't think.  Been a while since I sold mine to pay another month or two of the mortgage.  > sigh <
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

go the 5.0 rout and a manual valvebodied auto, best of both worlds. but a car with 300hp that weights as much as a squirrel needs a roll cage.
good luck

Go for the Bug.  True hot-rod bugs are cool.  No matter what you do to the Miata, it's still a Miata.

It always makes me laugh when I hear people say the miata is a chicks car. It has so much potential with it size and weight. I think the miata is an great car and when my crx and corolla are done it will be the next car project.

I would suggest a nissan SR20 or a F22 out of a S2000. Both provide more then enough power for that size of car and have a HUGE aftermarket support for stock and performance parts.

I plan on rocking the F22 in a first gen without a front window and huge fender flares.

I stand by my statement, no matter what you do to a Miata, it's still a Miata. 8)

But hey, this world would be a pretty boring place if everybody liked the same thing. :)

For free with a title, i'd take it...give it a good clean up when I got it home, then decide about whether to make it into a project or sell it for a quick buck. I know my ex gf used to have one and I couldn't fit in it with the top up...comfortably lol.

i've onwed and driven spitfires, mgb's mgbgt, sprites midgets. IF i get the miata it will be a v-8 car. i even have the differential needed for the conversion as i was going to try and make my 85 mustang lx irs.

everyone says the miata is gay, I like em.
A supercharger with a small pulley and some head work and you got yourself a pretty quick car.

I like the wide-body kit for the miata.
the wing... eh, not so much.

everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Yes, I know this is an old thread, but why start a new one on the same subject?  The black one above is Chris Lee's '95 built turbo, and you should check out what else he does with his spare time....

Get it if it's free.  I've always liked them, just like the old MG and Triumphs but more reliable.  They have Miata Days around the Dragons Tail in July I think.  Tons of them running the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway.

Sadly your advice is over 2 and a half years too late ;D
I only looked at post because I didn't know what a Miata was, if it said Mazda MX-5 I would have known instantly, as has been hinted at it is a modern Japanese improvement of the classic British Sports Car.

I had a Miata. It was funny, like if Chewbacca had a Miata.

I wish I still had it. Mine was a '91 A-Build in Mariner Blue, no power steering, no a/c and crank windows. 84k miles, so reliable you could weld the hood shut and insane gas mileage.

As for it being a girl's car, that's fine. I could say a lot of things about a lot of cars. Especially if people are making a payment. To accept a car payment as a lifestyle is to accept mediocrity. Period.  8)
