WTF! Ball Bearings all over the damn place!!
« on: October 17, 2009, 02:34:48 PM »
I didn't think that when I removed my lower tree the little bastards were going to bounce all over the damn garage! Nothing was holding them there but 30 year old grease! I think I found them all, can I still use them?

You can reuse them but considering upgrading to a roller bearing set.  Not very expensive and easy enough to install.

Are the roller bearings enclosed in some kind of case so they are not just "free ballin" all over the place?

Yes they are encased.  There are 2 pieces: one race, and another race with the rollers in a cage.

The trick is knowing how many balls there were. Hint, top and bottom are 1 different. Nobody would tell me either.

Having disassembled this far it would make no sense to skip replacing the bearings.

Nothing was holding them there but 30 year old grease!

If you re-use them here's a tip:  Use zero-year-old grease to hold them in place while you install the lower tree.

Here's how I did it. Should still work with the frame right-side up:

A big 'ol rubber band works great for keeping things together.

I followed your rebuild post and had no idea why everybody said the rubber band was a great idea, now I know  :P

go to ur honda dealer and ask for the all balls tapered bearing not to expensive and well worth it... the timken bearings are a load more and  need a little special care to get them to fit but if u have access to to a metal shop they'll be worth it... but its an upgrade ive made on 2 of my bike and am about to order for my other two

I had the horrible notch in the center position that I thought was a "feature" until I went "tapered".  The bike feels much nicer now.

You'll notice better handling out on the road too.  It's like the difference in handling between 10 psi low on the front tire and correct tire pressure.
