Project Nightfire..... LEDs or not? SOLD
« on: October 18, 2009, 06:59:31 PM »
so i picked up this 750 with a 73 parts bike .... no engine mods have happened yet but this winter i wanna get into the heads and do a hemi job and some porting... so im gonna need some advice on internal mods as well as some cosmetic changes.... first thing to already go is the messed up lowering kit... ok lowering kit but wrong shocks...  the straight pipes are off and i got a 4 into 1 header and a huge muffler for 50 bucks. this tank is a big one  i think a 4.5 gallon im debating i have the 73 tank i could paint up but this one is in good shape so we'll see... the apes are gonna go also and maybe i turn the parts bike into a chopper of some type and put them on there... some cosmetic things id like to change is the engine is way to flat of a black.. but im gonna polish the covers and maybe paint the block a gloss black

The 78K engine is basically a 75/76F engine with pumper carbs so it should fit.  You have the external finned collar, a two piece internal collar, and a ring gasket.  Should be the same between the two engines.  The fitment problem may be due to the muffler and how/where it is mounted.  The F and K frames are different.

Just my two cents.  If the exhaust system is in good shape I would think twice about cutting it up.  These are not easy to find for those looking for a stock system.  Unless you want the Stock F system you could possibly sell/trade if for exactly what you want.   Whatever you do if you don't want the muffler and it is in nice shape I would be interested in it.

I was thinking that the leak was at the head but is it at the collector or the muffler?  There should be 4 "donut" gaskets one for each pipe as it enters the collector and one for the muffler.  There really isn't any spacer just the three main parts, header, collector, and muffler along with gaskets, clamps, and head collars.  Take a look on the http://www.BikeBandit.com  website at the parts breakdown for the 75/76 CB750F exhaust system and make sure we are talking about the same thing.  Before you put it to the saw let's talk.

These two photos give you some reference as to how it is mounted on my bike.  The muffler has a bracket that reaches up and attaches to the back of the rear foot peg mount.

Just had another thought.  Did you get the complete F exhaust system or are you trying to fit the stock K headers into the F muffler and collector?

it ended up being the collars in the wrong direction that s how they came off though so that s how they went back in... some one posted a parts exploded and caught my my eye so i turned them around and it sealed them right up...

now im wondering whats up with my tranny..... its impossible to find neutral while the bike is running and going under 10  but moving or if its off, its not too too bad to find... and this thing can be taken out of any gear with outgoing into the nest like every gear has a neutral in between it and if i get caught between a gear it takes alot of effort  to put it back and a lot of grinding... is there any easy way to tighten up my shifting? or i guess the tranny

I am no tranny expert ;D but will offer this observation.  There was a thread discussing this not to long ago and I think part of this is just a quirk of these old bikes.  Sometimes they require "old school" shifting techniques.  I have found that if I hold in the clutch and try and shift down through several gears all at once it will sometimes hang up in phantom neutral, not every time but once in awhile.  If I make a conscious effort to shift down one gear at a time no problems.  The problem of getting it into neutral when running has not been a problem so there may be some issue there.  Finding neutral when hot is a common issue with the XS650 but can be fixed by a simple modification and adjustment.  I have not done the mod on my 79 as it was never a chronic issue that others had.  I can down shift with abandon on the XS and not have any problem.  Just differences in bikes I guess and it took me a bit to get used to the difference between the two.  It just seems the Honda is a bit more finicky in the way it is shifted.  If the problem is happening all or most of the time maybe there are some adjustment issues but what they would be I will leave it to the experts to chime in.

i hear you there but i think that this could be remedied but hopefully its not a full tranny rebuild (which is what im afraid of) my 550 k of the same year only does this in between 4 and 5   but shifts much smoother... i dunno what kind of oil is in it (its new). but we'll see i await the experienced

If that is truely a 78 K then you already have a hemi style combustion chamber. Look on the top head fin, intake side, betweenh #2 & #3 closest to #3. If you see a 392 cast into the head then it is already hemi'd. Now porting and a hotter cam would be a good thing.

Try switching to a synthetic motorcycle oil and see if the shifting into neutral improves. I didn't believe it until I actually switched in my Fat Boy.

I'm with Steve on the exhaust. DO NOT cut it up! I put a Kerker on mine but the stock F exhaust is in a cabinet in my garage.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

it  ended up being that my collars were on backwards.... my newest problem is that the exaust blocks the rear brake lever... but i hope to tear into the 73 soon and i guess i'll remidey the issue closer to reassembly

Here is a close up of the brake lever mounting on the F.  The triangular bracket also mounts the rear master cylinder.  The frames are a bit different in that area.  This last weekend I saw a 73 750K with an F exhaust, seat, tail piece and tank but did not get any pictures. :(   The levers are also different with the F having a bit of bend outward right at the rear of the footpeg.  Maybe an F lever would do the trick.

I see you have the muffler up where it is supposed to be.  A few K bikes I have seen with the F exhaust have the muffler lower to clear the brake lever but then it looks like it may cause problems leaning to far into a right turn.  I don't see the stock brake lever but it looks like you came up with something,  I can't quite make it out.
