Rear shock configuration 74 CB550?
« on: December 15, 2005, 02:02:16 PM »
What is the stock configuration of rear shock for a 74 CB550?
My bike has a clevis at the bottom and a pin type connection at the top.
I ordered a set of shocks for the bike and got a set with rubber grommet/pin type connection at top and bottom. The vendor says I have a very unusual setup. I thought I have a stock swing arm.
So, please, you CB550 owners out there, do your rear shocks have a clevis at the bottom?
Thanks,
Charlie

Your vendor is an a$$.

All 500/550 had clevis at the bottom. In fact, I think all sohc4 had clevis at the bottom (anyone?)

Thanks gents, that's what I thought.

My parts order specifically for CB550 came wrong. Talking to the fellow on the phone, he indicated that his reference for the CB550 gave what I was sent, and that I must have an unusual setup. I guess his database must be wrong.  In talking about getting the right stuff it didn't seem like he could put his hands right on the correct type of shock. I'm sure we'll get it worked out eventually.

Kevin, the grab rail is great! Thank you! I had the original turn signals but no stalks. I picked up a set of stalks but they seem too long and I home brewed some rubber mounts out of the sidewall of an old tire. Eventually, I'll get it back to the way it should be. Thanks for your help. Merrry New Year.

Yes,all SOHC4`s have a clevis type bottom mount.
Yes,the vendor is an a$$ ::)
I`ve got originals on 1 of the 500`s and Boge Mullholland on the other , the difference is like night and day.
Don`t go with a cheap copy of the original Showa.
Look for Progressive , Hagons or ProLift shocks where you have variable damping. Believe me , it`ll feel like a whole new bike.

Before you berate the parts guy too much...
There is a CB550 SC  Nighthawk 1983 model, not and SOHC4.  But, I don't know how the shocks mount on that one.

However, if you were clear in your request as to the year and they ordered for the wrong year, you should not have to pay for their mistake.

I have one of those '83 DOHC CB550 Nighthawks in the garage next to the '76 SOHC CB550k. The DOHC shocks ARE eye-to-eye, and the SOHC are eye-to-clevis. I just sold a set, otherwise I'd have offered them to you, even if they are just the original Honda/Showa units... I do have another set, but they're FUGLY rusted.
