1986 VFR750 Might Buy?

I might buy a used '86 VFR 760 on Friday, haven't seen it yet but from what the owner said about the bike not running, it might be a parts bike i might have to get a motor for- we'll see. 35,000 on the odometer and he is initially asking $700- will probably offer $500 as a parts bike- fairing plastic is painted and didn't look so great in the photos.

He said it just stopped when he was riding it to get it licenced and the starter won't engage at all, repair guy that took a look at it said the timing chain might have broke?!?!? These cams are gear driven!!! he said he had no idea, he is not mechanically inclined, so that means he didn't monkey with it at all. Said he put a new clutch in, rebuilt alternator, some wiring, new seat.

Oh well, I will take a look on Friday and see if it is worth $500 and my time.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

A 92 VFR is a great bike.  The early V4s had some problem with I think cams.  Honda did fix the problem with a retro fit for oil supply.  I can not remember the years when it was going on.  VFRs were good handling bikes and the V4 idle is so cool.  If it is the bad cam years, check if it has the Honda fix.  I think the dealer would stamp the engine at the engine number after it was repaired.  There is a VFR forum, but I sold mine before I was internet able.  I liked those bikes.

early ones had problems with cam chain tensioners even after the 'chocolate' cams were fixed, it was the reason for the gear drive (which had its own issues)
 I won't say anymore as most 'old timers' know my views on VF's.

Please enlighten, I don't want to waste money on something I'll rue 'till the day I sell it to some unsuspecting schlub or drop it off at the salvage yard.

From what I have heard people say once they got the gear driven cams in '86 these bikes were fairly bulletproof (save the R/R).

I'm not really 'qualified' to speak about VF motors as I worked on them too often after warranty was up in a Suzuki/Yamaha dealers. basically, I just don't like them in any shape or form so I'm very biased

I think they were chain driven cams, then they went to gear driven, and then back to chain.

The 86 gear driven cam engine solved the oiling problem.  They're fast, especially from around 8000 to 11000.
