Brake Fluid

Honda car dealers claim that only Honda brake fluid should be used in Honda cars. I have a full bottle left over from having Honda cars. Is it appropriate to use for a classic Honda C B 750? It is Dot 3. Is this just a gimmick to sell Honda brake fluid?

DOT3 brAKe fluid is all the same stuff as far as I'm concerned.  Just don't keep brAKe fluid around too long in opened (as in broken-seal containers) for more than a few months as the stuff absorbs moisture.

I'm not sure it is possible to break a fluid.  Perhaps if you freeze it first....  Of, course it is no longer a fluid then, is it?

Yep agree.
Dot 3 is Dot 3.
Dot 4 is Dot 4 which supposedly doesn't absorb moisture as readily as Dot 3.
Even Toyota today reccomend using Dot 3 in their systems.
I have heard that using Dot 4 in their systems can cause major havoc.
It appears to be a bone of contention like the engine oil discussion - But we're not going there!! ;D ;D
Dot 3 is the devil we know and I think it is the safest bet providing the container has been well sealed.

Interesting,i have ALWAYS used dot 4 brake fluid and never had a problem.

I've done the same myself without any problems too.
I did hear that not using Dot 3 in the late model Toyota Landcruiser systems can be an expensive mistake.
It is hard to know what is right and what isn't and what to believe.
I guess by putting in what the manufacturer reccomends at least covers your backside.

I think most of the confusion can be attributed to Auto manufacturers wanting customers to use their own products, i am not too sure about the cruisers though, next time i see my mechanic i will ask and see what he says..

I've heard that if you have a brand new brake system on our old bikes, and when I say new I mean everything. New lines that have never been used, new or fresh built and clean master cylinder and caliper you can use dot 4 but have been told not to mix dot 4 and dot 3. As far as brake fluid goes Dot 3 is Dot 3 I don't care if it comes from the dealer or from the local parts store.

I used a can labeled synthetic Dot3&4 when I rebuilt my break ;D system.  Why, because it was sitting on my shelf unopened.  So far so good.  Are two Dots better than one? ;D

They've all been superceded by Dyna Dot X.............and it guarantees not to brake your stopping system................. ;D

By mixing them you now have DOT3.5

Hmm mick's article does not mention synthetics. I use a synthetic dot4. Has worked very well. Regardless, a person should drain and refill their fluid every other year if not every third year. Just my thoughts.

Have you heard about the new brake fluid thats coming out at the first of the year. Its called DYNA 6.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
