Well, well that's not very nice.
Ok, what's with the permit to have a radio playing in the store?
Do you need a permit to play a radio at home also?

When I worked in a factory in England you used to have to pay a licensing fee to play a radio and the boss picked up the tab until it went up to about 100 quid. He did a whip round and got...zero! That was the end of playing a radio at work.
I thought it was far worse when we were banned form flying the St George "in case it offended the Muslims". That's when I got out!

It's a tricky subject...  In America songs over the radio have already been "paid for" with a blanket performance license and can be played so long as it is only over a certain number of speakers and/or depends on the size of the establishment.  If a place is too big or if it goes through too many speakers it could be considered "redistributing" the signal and therefore subject to further performance fees.

If you have a personal CD and are piping the music through a PA system for the sake of customer enjoyment without permission, you can be charged a performance license fee.  This is because while you may have purchased the CD or music on the CD, copyright protects the redistribution of content through transmission.  This is why XM or Sirius for businesses is more expensive, because the services are covering those fees.

If it makes you feel better, those fees being paid are performance royalties, so the funds go back to the artists and publishing companies.  It only makes sense that someone who creates their own content would be paid for you using it in your place of business.

Ok, I've got nothing against an artist earning good money for the work he's put into creating a song or what ever, but hasn't the radio station already paid this out to the artist in the first instant? If what you say is true and that I'm playing my radio to my customers in let's say a service station (gas station), and therefore I too have to pay royalties, isn't that a double whammy for the artist??

Hmmm.. I can see playing music to a large group of people (100+) might be infringing on copyright laws but in a little store with a few customers?  Harsh...  Then telling the poor lady she can't sing?  WTF...  Glad they apologized, it sounded like some dill-weed at PRS made the decision to prosecute by himself.

All this just goes to show that we as a society are stupid dumb idiots without even a single lick of sense! Disagree with me? Just look at all the really stupid dumb idiots that we put in power. Any reasonable smart intellegent person would never elect or appoint these a$$holes into the positions that they hold. We wouldn't allow them to make these really dumb stupid laws and rule over us taking all our hard earned money with these stupid rules/laws/taxes. Shame on us....duh...uh....hum....oh well.....

Did you know that shops that sell musical instruments have to pay a yearly "royalties" fee in this country?
If someone ,testing out an instrument, plays a well known riff in the shop that shop is technically in breach of copyright laws if it hasn't paid this fee up front.
Double whammy? Triple, Quadruple, (and whatever the next one is ;D) How did you think the Simon Cowells of this world got to be so revoltingly rich without actually doing anything?  ;D :-\

Aw crap, your responses have really depressed me, 'cos I know they're true. I get the feeling that wherever you live and whatevere your social status, getting shafted most of your life is, like death and taxes, inevitable.
Nowadays, whenever I see some tramp walking aimlessly along country roads pushing a supermarket cart containing a few bags and rags, I'm starting to think that maybe, maybe they have the right idea; just opt out of society and go your own way. No money, no house, no bank account, no taxes, no identity...........just living by your own smarts.

Even disney made a movie with tramp in the title.  What would be the PC title?

Lady and the Tramp => Lady and the Mutt?  Lady and the Stray?  Lady and the Homless Dog?

Sorry for the threadjack :(

Because the Tongan people still consider dogs as food (a family in Auckland was recently found to have barbqed the family pet in an umu) you may now have crossed the cultural sensitivity barrier, I'm sure there must be a government department whose sole aim is to prosecute offences of such a nature! ;D

The RIAA has begun going after websites that contain guitar tabs.  It seems to me that they don't want to promote any musician's work. After all, if I can't hear it, or play it, how am I going to know what's there for me to buy?

I know, I downloaded as many as I could before most of the good ones got closed down.
I mean I can see the reasoning in an artists original work being charged for but most of these sites held cords and tabs by guys just picking a song and fitting cords to it, the variation is amazing with some using a G where others would use an Em so not really original works.
I bought a book of cords and tabs from a book store recently and only 3 of the 40 songs were of any good to me as I'm such a crap player  ;D should I get a 70% refund? :D

sounds like the whole world is f'ed up.

btw, now with our xm radio bill we have to pay and extra royalties fee. I thought the idea
behind radio was to play an artist music so folks might want to buy it. Kind of like free advertising
for the artist. Come to think of it, shouldn't the radio station consider charging the artist every time
they play the song?
