$55,000 affordable home upgrade!

Reading the Popular Science mag and one of their articles shows how to upgrade to customized windows for an 'affordable' $55,000!
instead of having standard windows installed for $137,000usd.
Now seriously, how many people out there can really afford this?

I paid $65,000 for my house 7 years ago....

Seems most newpaper/magazine articles are geared only for the top-tier homeowners.
I could buy 10-20 cb750's and install them in a heated garage for less $.

That reminds me of a TV commercial that sells home furnishings, kitchen fixtures and cabinets etc.  where the "clients SAVED $35,000 on their kitchen cabinets"  :o  ::)  JEEEEEZ Loise!  I spent $6000 for the ENTIRE kitchen and that included a new range and a dishwasher!  HOW FRIGGEN BIG IS THEIR KITCHEN?  Gimme a break.

I dont think it was a misprint. First this is some ECO-Green-treehugger yada yada house so you gotta factor that in when they are going for either name brands or custom parts\designs. Also I would say the house was 70-80 percent windows, I mean there were a lot and some that went from floor to roof. I think the windows were also based off a design that is normally for industry buildings that were customized for his house.

Okay, you made me go and read the article.  First, we are talking 47 windows.  I have a decent size house and all I have is 26.  And from the diagrams, they look pretty large.  And odd shaped as well.  I can see why he needs "custom" windows.  At $137,000 it works out to just less than $3,000 per window.  Certainly high, but it is custom.  At $55,000 it is certainly more affordable at almost $1,200 each  That doesn't seem too bad for a large custom window.

Right, $1,200/window could be considered not excessive,
but, my points were: this is not an 'average house' nor
what an 'average person' could afford.
The impression I had from the article was both points were about
average house/people.

I just read the on line version and they were argon filled.

I have 60 windows in my place and many of them were custom sizes "triangles" and "Quadrilaterals" they are VERY expensive!!!!! I remember a couple upstairs "top right" here that were $800.00+ a piece ::)

In our case we are South facing, the argon keeps the high angle sun rays out in the summer and allows it in with a low sun angle in the winter. It could be 0 outside, but if the sun is out it's 70 degrees upstairs by noon.



I did not pay $55,000 though ::)
