Maier Side Panel

Has anybody had experience with these?   I'd like to get a second set of body work for my bike for a look that I have in mind.  Are the Maier pieces (that I saw on Dennis Kirk) a tolerable substitute?  Thanks.

They're rubbish. Depending on your budget, look at the repro ones on the David silver Spares website, (or that mob in Holland, but they're expensive) the DSS ones are excellent quality (better than the OEM ones, I #$%* you not) and good value. The Maier covers look like they've been pressed from used ice-cream containers! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I have the maier side covers on my K8. I like the way they look but in my experience they are a bit brittle. just a little too tight and the mount holes that you have to drill will crack...and if you want a pefect fit you will have to cut around the mount tabs a bit...but you have to do that on almost all repro-plastic/fiberglas body parts.

Go with the DSS if you can afford to spend the dough, the maier ones are ugly and look fake.  I dont know if the ones on cmsnl are the same as DSS.  Anyone?

Dude!  I know there's been a lot of talk about making reproductions, but man whats wrong with makin your own stuff??  I'd say 95% of the bikes on this list are modded in some way or another, Whats wrong with taking a little initiative and making some body work??

Just a barely tolerable substitute, as in one step better than nothing.
I have not seen the DSS pieces, but I have heard that they are very good.
I think we can trust Terry this time.   :D

I have a pair of DSS side covers for my '75 CB400F project - they come in a very fetching black and are very nicely done.  Bought them before I found another NOS pair that had just been pro painted, together with a tank - all three just needed the decals (which they now have).

I'm not familiar with the Maier offerings, but despite that I'd say go with the David Silver versions - good product, good service, not too heavy on cost.

For my bike I bought the Maier panels out of Dennis Kirk. They look alright, but I did have to do a little bit of modification to get them to fit properly. The thing that bugs me the most on them is that they no longer used the little plastic tabs to clip into place, they come with screws and little pressure nuts that sqeeze into the rubber gromets from the stock set up. It's really not that bad for the electrics side since I plan to have tools anyway if  need to works on the electrics, but the when it comes to checking the oil... it's just one more tool to have to carry around.

If you're just looking for somethng to replace nothing, I say go for it. If your doing a reaaly nice resto, go DSS. If you need to replace just one, check out ebay first. If you cannot find just one, replace both so that you have a mtching set.

I bought a DSS one and it is good quality and it cost 30 pounds, the CMS ones are 50 pounds, but I can not speak to the quality.

Wow gee 30 pounds for 1 cover. I can get a 3 meiers and paint them for the price of 1 DSS cover. I got them and for a K8, we are limited. Once painted, it looks just fine. Looks as good as the stock covers did. Mine flex very well although some paints do not like that. And I have never had a screw hole crack. Yes you do have to trim them but the plastic was very strong so I used a dremel sanding drum to sand them down. Maybe the quality has gotten better than what others have.

It may not look completely stock but if I can get 2 covers and make them look however I want and they look decent, that is good enough. I have other things to spend my money on for my bike, like a new cam and 836 conversion sometime.
The left side cover looks great and the onlyh gripe I have about the right side is down at the lower mounting bolt for the oil tank. That area needs some extra trimming. Maybe someday if I have money to blow and nothing that I need or want for my bike, then maybe I will pay the extortionist prices of DSS and repaint the cover anyways.

I agree, silly money for the covers. As long as you are happy with the look, that's all that counts.

It is unless you are a purist or live in the UK and dont have the extra shipping! Damn bush has butchered our economy and now our dollar is worth almost nothing in europe or the uk.

I am surprised there isn't a DSS or similar in the US, given the number of older Hondas that you have there?

I've also heard that they're shaped roughly like side panels, and attach to motorcycles.  That's about it.
