Kerker Sounds of Music - CB750 at 11,000 RPM, Not Your Top 40!
« on: October 22, 2009, 05:56:22 PM »
Guys, one of the most rewarding things I've built in many years is my CB836. For years I'd read about and looked at other builds in magazines and for years I wanted to build a version of my own. I've got a nasty H2 that's is a waste. I can testify and swear to you that "more is not better". This little 836 SOHC is not nearly as fast as the built-up 750 Kawi, it is so much more than the Green Kaw will ever be - ridable. This evening I finally clamped my VHoldR camera to the rear bar and went for a warm-up and after about 20 minutes, stepped on it so I could have the sound clip. This video is in two parts - the first is to show how docile and really quiet/sweet the Kerker with it's 1.5" baffle can be around town and in neighborhoods. Then the second video is what a SOHC sounds like shifted at 10,500~11,000 RPM. The motor really doesn't make it's power that high, but this was intended to be a sound clip not a wheelie or tire smoking demonstration. I targeted the shifts at 10.5, but as you'll hear the Dyna 2000 did come to duty at least once. The porting on this head is soooo sweet to allow this range. The Carillos let me survive those jaunts to 11,000. No, I don't ride it like this - but you could. This is with a MegaCam 65. The 75 would naturally deliver more at the 10,500 point. I made the chop when I hit an indicated 120 - way too fast for me, not legal on any road, and not smart for a man in his 50's, but you have to make sacrifices for music every now and then....

Sorry about the wind noise, these cameras are made for bicycle helmets - I think I may have exceeded the designer's limits  :)

Julie Andrews never sounded like this !!, Insane revs !...very impressive. BTW, the vid. cam. right above the Kerker is overloading the mic. really bad, trying the cam.on the other side of the bike might be better, also a small piece of foam taped over the mic. will stop wind noise, I love to hear it done again !!!!

Uh, 11,000 in 5th......I will admit that I'm missing the manhood needed to record that verse of the song :)

On the foam, I've looked at some post on the VholdR website on the fix, but so far, none have work for me. I've done several off the front of my ST through the mountains, but all have wind noise. Most folks edit and add/replace with music, but I intended for the Kerker to sing the lead on this one. I'd appreciate some pics or advice on eliminating the wind noise.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Your overdriving that mic pretty badly, it can't handle the low notes on the exhaust. You might want to figure out a way to mount it higher up, like say, on the back of your helmet... or maybe even IN your helmet. No wind noise in there.  ;D

Could also be blown from the wind, 120+ decibels of that screaming exhaust. Test it out inside first to see if it distorts.

I want a kerker exhaust now...and a CB750 that runs lol...even with the wind noise and distortion I have to say that sounds freaken awesome! Is it earplug loud at WOT? I just remember my Kerker White Tip system on my FZ750 was a serious sound polluter at anything about 3k rpm.

I got mine on the highway for a run yesterday but it isn't close to that. But i got a taste, picked up a wobble that held me to 70 or less dang it. And thank you, I listen and smile then do it again! ;D

Smart, maybe not but doesn't that feel great to a guy in his 50's?!! I surely enjoy running mine through the gears. Couple more years and I won't be in my 50's  ;) Can't wait to get the frame tightened up. Looked like the headlights were going in reverse.  :o

Which baffle? Competition I'm assuming. I have the street baffle which sounds good but not that deep. However, I've never heard mine from the rear either. You've given me something to think about.

Anymore projects or just taking some time for riding?

Now if there was room in my helmet for a camera, I think there would be other serious issues to be dealt with...the pipe is not loud at all. In fact it's addicting in how it goes from a robin to a vulcher in just a few thousand RPM.

Jerry, that is the 1.5" baffle - just one size short of the full 2" competition baffle. This photo shows the bike and the 1.5" exhaust baffle in place. Buzz told me they dyno tested them both and there was 2-3 horsepower difference at the very top and that the 2" was certainly not for the street. Since I was building a streetable engine, he strongly suggested this one. The photo was taken after the first build/restoration - before the heavy studs, balancing, Carillos, CR29's, and the Dyna2000.

On the projects, my recent 1974 Suzuki GT750 won a 1st place at Barbers 2 weeks ago. I'm now working on a 1906 Gray Ghost replica. I'm full and nowhere to park another bike, so the door is closed on any more real projects.

Bloody sound is out on my computer but i bet it sounds great. You build some gorgeous bikes Gordon, excellent work. What was it like doing 120 with that seating position, just a little windy i would imagine... ;)  Any more pics of that bike.?

Gordon,

I enjoyed the vids and as you already know, I love the sleeper look of your CB.  You still gotta get an APE crank in there.

You bike seems louder than mine, probably just the proximity of the camera to the pipe.

Hope to do some Soda blasting next week...tried a few small things and so far...looks good...leaves a nice smooth finish on aluminum and removes the factory engine paint on the GS pretty well.

Ed, I want to take this top-end down on the CB750 to add those cam tower supports and have the heads and cyclinders blinged out by Diamond Heads. I'm really looking forward to seeing your results.

As you know, my brother Norman still has his 2 BMW's parked in his shop - untouched. I'd actually like to have a nice toaster model.

Post me a pic -
