A lesson for all of us!?
« on: December 16, 2005, 03:55:54 AM »
I was riding home last night on the infamous M25 in the UK, the traffic was solid for about 10 miles, as usual!
I had picked my way through the traffice very carefully avoiding angry BMW and Merc drivers and Artics/semis from the continent. Even one guy who decided to open his car door and get out of his car right in front of me!!
Anyway, I survived and was about to feed left throught the traffice for my exit, when a modern racer style motorbike cut right across in front of me and I missed him by inches because I saw him, he didn't even check if anyone else was picking their way through the heavy traffic.
So, the morale is; your's not the only bike on the road, so watch out for the other biker as well as our four/8/16 wheel 'friends'!!
Haroomph!!
Jim.

A rider must be 100% aware of his/her surroundings 100% of the time.  Sometimes that may not be enough  :(

I agree; it would have been ironic to be knocked off by another biker!! I must admit that I do not always see a bike approaching at high speed on a main road, I have been shocked a couple of times when a bike rockets past me, a couple of feet away. It is always a CBR, GSX etc bike, with a guy in full racing leathers; not stereotyping here, just stating my personal experience!

For our American cousins who may not know - Motorway = Freeway.  The M25 motorway (etc..that encircles London) is reputed to be the World's largest circular Car Park due to the constant traffic gridlocks.

Just thought you might want to know that.... ;D

I agree entirely Jimmy, a few years ago I was commuting to work on the freeway here, there were raodworks ahead so the traffic was crawling, anyway a guy on a Harley Fatboy scared the crap outta me as he roared past me so close our 'bars almost touched, I was "lane splitting" between cars and he managed to make a second "sub lane' between me and a car.

After a few more minutes, the traffic stopped completely, and in the distance i could hear the wail of sirens, so I figured there'd been a "prang". I was still able to slowly thread my much abused old BMW R100RS through the stationary traffic and soon arrived at the accident site, and was horrified to see that the ambulance paramedics were "bagging up" the Harley guy!

It looked like a car was doing a lane change as he came up the inside, and he was effectively crushed between two cars. Surprisingly the bike didn't look too bad, the cops had put it on it's sidestand and I had plenty of time to look at it as I waited for everyone to pack up the dead biker and move all their vehicles off the freeway so we could all continue our daily commute. the scene stayed with me for awhile, and every time I see fools "lane splitting" between slow moving vehicles at unsafe speeds I think about the Harley guy................ Cheers, Terry. :(
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It's bright dry and sunny here today, but still bloody cold and windy!
Also, to all reading the posts, remember today is the start of the Christmas party season/madness, with lot's of pissed up wankers on the road, so take extra care.
I notice that Wanker is on the derogatory terms 'list'!  :) ;)  If you didn't see the other post "What do you think' then it's your own fault.

So there's a "derogatory terms list" is there?

Does that mean I can delete all the references to "wanker" in your various posts Jim?

Easy - that's obviously what the search box is for!

Terry, thanks for the eye-opener. That, I think, is the main reason I avoid multi-lane roads at all costs. Earlier this year I got my old 550 out on a freeway (ProTeal, I was on IL-53 S/I-290 E), got it up to about 60, and just as I was coming into a lefty sweeper, some jackass in a rice-rocket car (you know the ones, with the giant plastic 'storage hook' on the back) cut me off in an effort to make the next exit... that I was about 50 yards away from! This was at SIXTY MILES AN HOUR, and he PASSED ME to use an EXIT RAMP!!  :o
I was so shaken up I barely made it to the next exit, and exit I did, right quick! From now on, I will endeavor to go EVERYWHERE, from one side of this country to the other or wherever, on LOCAL ROADS. Yeah, it'll take me forever to get there, but at least I WILL get there!  :-\

Wankel engines:

Mazda made the brilliant RX-7 and now the RX-8
Suzuki made the Re5 in the 70's and DKW (Das Kleine Wunder ?) made a rotary motorcycle as well.

A rider must be 100% aware of his/her surroundings 100% of the time.  Sometimes that may not be enough  :(

elizabeth (the new girlfriend that got run off the road by an SUV... if you havent read my jabbering about this... where have you been?) was so aware of her surroundings that she gave the police an exact description of the jeep grand cherokee and the mid 30's man driving with brown hair that drove away with no awareness of what he had done... yes, sometimes 100% awareness may not be enuf... especially when the only place to go is from concrete to gravel while hard on the brakes.

Jim I carry Bear spray for open doors. Has a tendency to kick thier arse and paint them bright green. No matter how nasty they want to be they are done after just one spray.

Bear spray is satan in a can.
Oil of capsicum pepper in a aerosol, it burns the skin, eyes water shut, and the recipients mucus production goes into over drive trying to flush it out of the nose and throat, very powerful stuff.
It is sold as bear repellant and will make a bear turn tail when sprayed with it, hence the name bear spray, it's also sold as a personal defense agent.
I farted and made my son cry.

Is that what we know as pepper spray or is it something stronger?

Apparently motorways are safer than other roads here in the UK, but I think this is for cars and not bikes!
I prefer non m/way roads but this is where the majority of accidents take place. However, I have this horrible image in my mind of skidding down a m/way on my arse with cars approaching me at 80 mph!
Re the bear spray, unfortunately all products like that are illegal in the uk! However, maybe hair spray or any other agent might work!
I personally advocate the use of some other legitimate method to resolve differences, but in 'the land of the free' anything goes?

It's been so long since I had a decent dump it's just a faded memory, and my stomach's so distended I can use it for a TV dinner tray! Hell right now I can hardly reach the keyboard! Anybody know if there's an antidote? I think my #$%*'s healing over? help me, anyone? Please..................    :o

Take two strong cups of coffee and a large bran muffin, that should do the trick.
Just don't leave the house for a couple of hours. ;)
