Topic: I need someone to translate this...

Ok, I've heard many of our UK friends use the term "at tick over" when describing how to make adjustments on the SOHC 4 engine. From what I can determine from the context in which it is used, it sounded like a way to say "idling". Is this right?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I'll be bugged until I find this out!

well them UK people are strannnnggee. I think they are referring to "top dead center" OR when the timing mark hits the "F".

"F" is not TDC on a 750, F is the timing marrk. If you are checking the valve clearances it is the marrk to the left of the "F" mark..What the H*LL does F mean anyway?

While we're on the subject of not knowing what Letters mean could someone tell me what the CB stands for, as in CB500, CB550 CB650 etc....?? Everyone I've ask, doesn't have a clue, one guy that's been repairing Honda's for 27 yrs, said it means "continious basketcase"....lol.....(he was just kidding but he didn't even know). Even at the Honda dealer here in town, know one has a clue.....anyone???

I believe that the CB means City bike. I think I have read previous postings and this was the consensus of translation. My cb750 k1 go,s like stink when i give it some laldy!!!! Translate that!!!

1. Though I'm spanish, I always considered "tick over" as "idling"
2. Gas takes some time since the moment of the spart to the moment of the explosion. That time is fixed. At "tick over", spark should happen on the F mark, so the explosion happens when the piston is at TDC (or just slightly forward). When speed increases, the spark should happen BEFORE the F mark (that is, away from the F and T), just because the explosion time is fixed, so at higher speed the crankshaft rotates more degrees for a given amount of time.
3. That has been discussed before, but for me CB means "cool bike".

First of all, thanks to all who responded- you've satisfied my curiousity!

In regard to the T and F marks, I could be wrong... It's been awhile since I've actually been in there with a timing light and the manual, so the memories are not too clear. Heck, now come to think of it, I don't remember what order they come in! I guess this is a good thing, since I'm finally at the point where I'm riding it more than working on it!

As for CB- I also heard somewhere that it meant City Bike, but I like Raul's explanation better!
