What am I doing wrong?
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:09:30 PM »
I can not get the grease off my swing arm and frame!! I am using a wire brush and Simple Green, but the stuff is just caked on. Is there something better than the simple green?

How worried are you about the paint?  Brake cleaner?

Old business cards work well to remove caked on crud from most things.  Perhaps warming the crud with a hair dryer and heating your simple green solution will help accelerate things?

Gunk grease remover works, the liquid brush on kind. The steel brush will be hell on your paint. If the swing arm and frame are bare a power washer will do it too. varsoll too.

Note: Magpie said bare, no motor or electrics on the bike, that's about the only time you would want to use a power washer on your motorcycle.

I would recommend not using one at all, they can screw up stuff you never thought you could screw up on your bike.

If it's caked on there real bad (chain lube?) then consider using a plastic putty knife to scrape off the worst of it.

In a pinch you could use the sharp end of wood shims, the blunt ends of bamboo shiskabob skewers, or anything similarly soft.

Good luck, that chain lube, oil and grime can become a flippin' rock.

A lotta rubbin' with gumout may work.  If the paint is still decent looking when you are done and not all tore up on the frame/swingarm, Meguires Cleaner Wax can bring back a good shine.
