Yeah, but (for those who don't know) here's the difference:

Despite its humble origin -- a very basic Dodge D150 pickup with a narrow box and shorty 115-inch wheelbase -- the Dodge Li'l Red Truck was an impressive package. For about $5,000, a customer got the high-line Adventurer cab in red or black, with bench or bucket seats.

From there, the buyer could personalize with extra gauges, including a tachometer, various sound systems, including eight-track tape or CB, and a "Tuff" steering wheel right out of the old Dodge Challenger R/T muscle car.

The 1978-1979 Dodge Li'l Red Truck came only in Canyon Red set off by bold gold decals on doors and tailgate, plus genuine varnished oak planking on box sides, tailgate, and bed floor.

But the real killer was that pair of tall, 2.5-inch-thick chrome exhaust pipes poking up through the step plates behind the cab. Wrapped in perforated metal heat shields, they looked like they'd been swiped from a Kenworth 18-wheeler.

Those stacks led straight to a 360-cubic-inch V-8, tuned as if smog regs didn't exist. Essentially, it was the E58 police unit (E for "Express," hence the name on the doors), sans "Lean Burn" and emissions hardware but fortified with a free-breathing Holley four-barrel carburetor, twin-snorkel fresh-air induction, beefed-up internals, and heavy-duty electrical.

End result: 225 horsepower and a thumping 295 lbs/ft of torque at 3200 rpm. Completing the performance picture were a three-speed Leaflet automatic transmission, 3.55:1 differential, stiff springs and shocks, and LR60-15 white-letter radials on eight-inch wheels.

Most examples of the 1978-1979 Dodge Li'l Red Truck carry the optional slotted chrome rims, power steering, and power brakes.

Performance was quite good for a time when smog equipment had a stranglehold on horsepower. The 1978-1979 Dodge Li'l Red Truck did the standing quarter-mile in under 16 seconds, 0-100 mph in 20 seconds. Adding to its appeal, production was just 2,188 for 1978, and 5,118 for 1979.

Somewhere, I've got two different magazines that did road test comparisons against the hottest cars of the time AND the other magazine did the same thing, except with the hottest trucks of the time AND the Little Red Express was the "Quickest, the Fastest, got the best gas mileage, had the Smallest engine , cost the least AND was a LIMITED PRODUCTION VEHICLE! ::) 8) ;)

When I started reading about the developing of THIS truck, I read everything I could get my hands on, about the truck from the start to finish. I drove my 69' road runner down to Little Rock Dodge and checked one out, with a salesman trying to deal with ME on MY 69' road runner and, finally, to shut him up, I said that the ONLY deal that they could make with ME would be that we swapped titles and keys, Straight across! THAT shut him up, after he said, "I can't do THAT!" I said, "exactly, now let me look at this truck!" With that, he handed me the keys and I went for a test drive, with him in there. Those stacks sounded sweet! 8)

I would drive by one of those on my way to work every morning, the guy who owned it would be leaving his garage in his other car and I could catch a glimpse most days.

Yeah Frank, they had the Warlocks in Black, Red and Green, I think.

The GMC 454 was one of the trucks that the 78 Little Red Express was tested against AND did it in. I don't remember what the Ford had in it, but it seemed like they even had a Jeep truck with a 401 in it. At any rate the Warlock was mainly a "cosmetic" deal, the Little Red Express wasn't. :)

these trucks were the quickest (and maybe fastest) american production vehicle when they came out... including the corvette! i had a car mag test confirming that claim.

a local guy i knew, we called the elephant man because he owns several hemi cars, has one or two of these trucks.  there were differences between the 2 years but i've plum forgot.

need it be said? mopar (before it was owned by the fed) kicked butt!

From these pictures, you can see some difference, the top one is the 78' and the lower one is the 79'. Obvious, is the change in the headlights and grille. The wheels on the 79' aren't stock. The 79' was hit by smog law changes
as well. The 78' would be the PRIME choice, but the 79' would, at least, be better than nothing! Somewhere, I HAVE TWO magazines that clearly show that this 78' was hotter than any performance car OR truck that it was tested against.

They made 2wheel drive versions too! ;)

         From Wikipedia:

The Dodge Warlock, originally a concept vehicle and part of Dodge's late 1970s "adult toys" line, is a short wheelbase truck that was produced in limited production in 1976 and regular production from 1977 to 1979 under the Dodge name brand by the Chrysler Corporation, later known as DaimlerChrysler, now known as Chrysler Group, LLC. They were available in 4x2 and 4x4 models and offered only in black, red, orange or green. Its main draw was that it was a factory customizable truck, also known as a "trick truck", and was designed to appeal to young 4x4 buyers. The 1979 model is different in that it has "Warlock II" printed on the tailgate. ;)

the only warlock i ever saw was 2wd. i wonder if they're more rare than the little red express.

they made a brief come back attempt with the little red express using the v8 dakota. i don't know if the stacks were fake though.

I don't guess I'd heard of the Dakota version. Main Dakota I heard of was the Shelby Dakota w/ the first V8 in there.

And then there was the Dakota Convertible

         DID find this:

That old red, looks way better than the new one..

The truck I had in them days was a 74 GMC 454 3/4 ton, up here that meant NO pollution control, cept maybe gas vapor recovery..
It was well used, but did not embarass easily.. ;)

did you guys have Plymouth TRAILDUSTER trucks down there?

Yeah, at one point, it depended on the GVW (gross vehicle weight classing) and you were exempt from smog controls at ( I think) the 6100 GVW. THe 78' Little Red Express fit that category. Yeah, I'm mostly a "Big Block Person" myself> ;)

Oh yes, the Trail Duster was the counter part to the Ramcharger! ;) Haven't seen one in years, course I haven't seen too many Ramchargers in awhile either. ::)

Funny, I was thinking that they were available either way. ???

Here's what I found, I thought I was right about this.

"The Plymouth TrailDuster was a large sport utility vehicle built and sold by Plymouth from 1974 to 1981. Based on a shortened-wheelbase version of the Dodge D Series/Ram pickup truck chassis. The Plymouth TrailDuster was primarily produced as a two-door, four wheel drive vehicle although a two wheel drive version was available."
