I had an idea in my head and you guys can tell me if it is nuts.

I was thinking of putting all 4 pistons in the cylinders and then attaching the 2 middle wrist pins and then outer 2.  Then just slip it all into place.  Is there a reason that you cannot do it that way?

I read the ideas, and I guess trying something new can't hurt, they're just toys after all.

And new tools are always cool to have.

And I'm certainly known as one to get stuck on an idea and not let go.

But I don't want to scare anybody away from this by making it sound harder than it is.

On a stocker with a good taper on the cylinder liner, the cylinders drop right on, with a little care and oil.

If the taper is less due to overbore, 2 - $1.00 hoseclamps work fine.

I've done 20 or 30 in my lifetime including some CB160s, CB77s, CB350s, my HawkGT, etc. Never broke a ring.

this does sound like a good idea.  i'm in the piston installation virgin club, and i've been toying with the thoughts of what exactly to do to make things a little easier with minimal cash...  but i generally take anything Ron has to say as the way its done...

Only if its something I have done...and learned...from others who have already crossed the bridge, often many times. And that's not to discourage anyone trying a different path, just to affirm an easy path already exists.

I got really stuck on a real easy thing on my project, masking off the engine for paint. It seemed like such a daunting task. I tried to do something new and innovative, cutting cardboard templates to cover the openings. It looked good, I got 2 of them done while a thread I had started was running here about the subject.

Bill (I think Bellcow)- mentioned using old covers. Heck I've got a box of old covers I could have screwed on and let the paint fly!. Others suggested the tried and true tape. So I broke down and low and behold in a matter of minutes I had the thing taped up (about an hour) and now its all painted. Threw the dang cardboard away! Had about 2 hours in them and not near finished.
