New to working on bikes; hoping the cb550 will be a good start
« on: October 29, 2009, 01:50:03 PM »
Quick bit about me:
I enjoy working on cars/trucks/just about anything, really.
I have wanted a cafe style bike for about four years but I have had other projects and just now got the opportunity to get into a bike project.
I have enough experience working on cars to solve most problems but I don't hesitate to consult someone wiser than me if I and unsure of something.
I am an accounting major at Belmont University and I only get to work on the bike on the weekends unless I can fit small projects in the car for the school week.
I know that I have a lot to learn about motorcycles.

Now for the project.
I bought a "bike in a box" from a guy in town for $240. I have a legitimate title, a frame, an engine w/ good compression, forks, wheels, and most other oem parts critical to building a cafe racer. I knew from the start that i'd be missing some expensive hardware and misc. parts that I'd need later, but I figured that from a $240 starting point I'd be o.k. in the long run.

I literally had a naked frame when I brought it home and I have began to start a "mock-up" so that I'll know what needs to stay and what can go. Like I said, this is my first bike or I would go ahead and start cleaning things up now. As of now it's sitting upright w/ both tires on and w/ the engine in. This weekend I plan on working on the linkages (carb, clutch, brakes, etc..) and possibly start working on a revised wiring diagram with a friend of mine who builds motorized camera jobs (I trust him with anything of mine that requires a multi-meter).

I joined the forum because with only one google search it was evident that many people on this site know how to build bikes, specifically the kind that I'm working on. I also wanted to stay motivated while working on the bike and I figure that by posting a build thread I would feel somewhat more responsible for getting work done all of the time.
