Anybody here familiar with this cb550 oil seal kit?
« on: October 27, 2009, 06:32:31 PM »
im looking for an oil seal kit for my '75 cb550 k1.  David Silver Spares told me that they could supply individual seals but that one is discontinued (the one on the end of the Mainshaft off the end of the needle bearing).  It is number 82 in this picture:

So I found another oil seal kit here:
http://www.cmsnl.com/products/oil-seal-kitcb550k_90000374000/

but im unsure of its quality.  Im especially weary because this website list its measurements as 34X9 and on other websites it's listed as 34x8.

ANy advice?

That kit is waaayyy too much $ for just that one seal. As for the other seals in that kit, I wouldn't use them. There's a post on the board about one of the aftermarket seals not having the correct oil passage in it and it wiped out someones freshly built motor.

Whats wrong with your old one? When I rebuilt mine I tried to order that seal and it was indeed no longer made by Honda. I just reused the old one with a thin layer of Hondabond all around its circumfrence. Not a drop of oil in 6k miles.

That make of seal kit is ok, I have used them lots and 19 euro for the complete kit is cheap,

First check out www.westernhillshonda.net for the one you want but ring them to see if they have stock as the website tells you everything exists

Why not just go to your local beraring/seal specialist. A fraction of the price and they understand the product. Take the old seals with you.
IMHO, it's never worth reassembling a motor with the same seals in place. ;)

The seals aint standards and the one he wants is a blanking plug anyway so Honda only (or seal kit)

ok well you've given me plenty top think about; I'll have to check out these options.  I really dont want to use the old seals cause that just seems like asking for trouble although maybe Im just being a little paranoid.

I'd never use any kind of internal rubber parts over. But, as was stated, this is just a blanking plug. Replacing may be a good idea, but don't spend 19 euros for just that plug if you can find an alternative. I haven't lost any oil or sleep over reusing mine.
