Wood chipper to eat parts or a trebuchet to launch them
« on: December 16, 2005, 08:13:56 PM »
I am considering using a wood chipper to eat parts people dont have enough sense to buy even at a low price. I figure each time I shred a part I am doing my part to drive parts prices sky high as they become less available. Maybe I will whip out the trebuchet and launch the damn things at a brick wall. I can launch complete motors at this point  :o . Dont get me wrong. I dont want to destroy parts I want to sell them.....

I just hate running in circles trying to sell parts that many dont buy. Just sour grapes on my part. I should enter the trebuchet in competition. I can chuck a 350 2 cylinder motor about 60 yards now. Not that I have tossed any bike parts with it to date. But I know I can toss that weight about 60 yards.  ;D Just get mad at it  >:( and load her up and away it goes!

trebuchet is a lovely device from medevil times. They would do crazy things like launch dead horses or soldiers into a city when they were getting ready to kick thier ass. Here's a pic. Not mine but similar. Like in Lord of The Rings sometimes they would load the bugger with the heads of the enemy.  ;D And let'em have it.  ;D Sick huh? But tell me just once you did not laugh.

Yes they are similar. A trebuchet uses weight to launch and a catapult uses some level of elastic banding or wrapped rope material to propel the main arm. Nonetheless, it is the same idea. For reference a trebuchet whips stuff much further. Whipping motors? A sick use of an archaic seige weapon....  ;) huh?

Well welcome to the real world. I have a bunch of old computer parts, but nobody will buy them. Thats because they are worthless.

I have a fiberglass camper shell on my Dodge truck I can't give away.

I have a garage full of crap I can't sell. So I'm failing to see your point.

No contest - a trebuchet all the way. But not to launch anything against a wall. to chuck a 220 pound motor across a subdivision is pure nirvana. how to alert the poor folk on the recieving end is the hassle. I watched the documentary where three groups of scientist/historian/novelists from different countries got to gether in a contest to build a working trebuchet that would knock down three foot walls from three hundred yards. Now picture a 220 pound CB engine going several hundred years at an apex altitude of 600 feet or so. Now that is impressive.
A wood chipper not so much so.

I used to have a motherload of computer stuff. I can tell monitors fly really far  ;D... Once I toss something I never look back to see what something was worth. My stuff that is not selling, I'm not talking about crazy things. I'm talking about things like turn signals, voltage regulators (TESTED), Rectifiers (ALSO TESTED), horns and the such. Not crazy stuff like rusty rims or just junk.

Don't be offended when your stuff doesn't sell. People buy these things when they have a little extra cash available or when they need them for a replacement. That may not be the same time as you have the item available to sell. It is certainly not intended to hurt you personally.

Trebuchet?? Can't you just say catapult like everyone else? :D

Anyway, if you need to get rid of 750 Parts, catapult them over to my house. I'm sure Bob and I could use them!

Different things. Trebuchet and a Catapult are two different animals as they work on different principles of physics to get the same job done.

Catapult

Catapults are siege engines using an arm to hurl a projectile a great distance. Any machine that hurls an object can be considered a catapult, but the term is generally understood to mean medieval siege weapons.

The name is derived from the Greek κατα (against) and παλλειγ(to hurl (a missile)). Originally, "catapult" referred to a dart-thrower, while "ballista" referred to a stone-thrower, but over the years, the two terms have swapped meaning.

Catapults were usually assembled at the site of a siege, and an army carried few or no pieces of it with them because wood was easily available on site.

trebuchet
A trebuchet , also sometimes called a trebucket is a medieval siege engine, a weapon employed either to batter masonry or to throw projectiles over walls.

The trebuchet is thought to have been invented in China between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. The trebuchet was a development of the Chinese traction trebuchet, where a large crew of men pulled down on ropes to propel the missile.

The device reached Europe around 500 AD, where men were replaced with a large fixed or pivoting counterbalance weight.

Trebuchets are often referred to as a variety of catapult, though it would be more correct to describe them as a scaled-up sling.

Now while parts of the same family (machines designed to hurl lovely heavy at your enemy) they are different in principle and function. Function because the arch of trebuchet is more extreme, much like a solider tossing a grenade. Catapult has a flatter trajectory, which is more a kin to the trajectory of motar fire. However the catapult was meant for closer range as its range is quite short and the trebuchet was for firing at a citys protective walls all while staying out of the range of archers.

Another vast difference catapults were mobil on wheels and trebuchets were fixed position structures. I guess they might launch the guy in charge if it were set up in the wrong place out of range.  :o

See... even rant threads can be educational. ;D

I guess all in all it is a matter of potatoe or potato. I never launch 750 parts, those I proudly horde. ;D ;)

ElCheapo, I've wanted a trebuchet ever since I saw one on Northern Exposure (a comedy a few years ago where a doctor just out of med school got assigned to a podunk town in Alaska) and the town disk jockey wanted to launch a cow as an expression of art. Instead he settled on a piano  :(

You design it yourself or get plans someplace? Way cool, man.
