How much does your CB750 weigh?
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:38:31 PM »
Post the weight and year, and any cool mods you did to get the weight down  ;)

Tip: Put a bathroom scale under the front tire and weigh it. Repeat on back tire and combine weights.

Actually, what I do is check my own weight, then lift my 750 off the ground (remember to bend at the knees) and check our combined weights, and finally I subtract my own.  ;D

I guess I should say what was done.
I cut off everything that was unnecessary
my seat only weighs 1.5 lbs
aluminum akront wheels
everything that could be drilled has had the piss drilled out of it
air box gone
pass pegs gone
frame ends gone
... I don't know what else.
it's funny how much weight you can lose off a part when you drill holes in it.
they all feel like I'm holding a feather.

hey stig sam, why is yours so much lighter?

My references put stock weight at 515lbs, likely wet.

The bike in my avatar was weighed on a grain scale at an elevator, pretty accurate as its for commercial purposes at 430lbs.

no fenders, turn signals, stripped harness, aluminum rims, no switchgear, (QA50 buttons and flimsy toggle) fiberglass tank and seat, no sidecovers, no elect start, lightened rotor. but I did add the disc.

hey stig sam, why is yours so much lighter?

IC, Aluminum oil and gas tank, narrower rear rim, lightened crank, no lighting system, no generator and that gearbox cover that you drilled 87 holes in has been removed alltogether, also no kick start shaft and cranker.
All surplus brackets off the frame and top TTT.
I could have made it lighter but Chris wanted twin discs and fairing. ::) ::) ::)

in this condition does it compete with a newer sport bike or is it still a dinosaur?

Using a CBR600 as baseline, most midsize sportbikes are sub 400lbs in street trim with LOTS more dependable horsepower.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CBR600RR

Easy to make them sub 350lbs with even more horsepower. It took a while, but since 1995 or so, its a pipe dream to think we can make a 70s era bike competitive with even a fully street legal avg modern sportbike.

Still we love our CBs.

Gab and Mcr, I never got to ride the bike after the motor was reworked so it's hard to say.
I dont think it would match an up to date 600 off the mark but it wouldn't be a long way behind on top speed.
Chris was a big guy, about 100lb heavier than me and I think his best time over the 1/8 mile was an 8.2 secs. I managed a 7.8 on a CBR600F3 after just 4 passes at Piedmont NC last year. Looking at it that way, I'd say with a lighter rider, it would be a match for the 600s of the early 90s.

I've seen people remove the kicker and shaft, they cap off the hole.
I've always wondered what they do...

As MEC says, the oilpump drive gear spins on the kickstarter shaft. So some allowance must be made. You can cut the end off the shaft flush with the cover, but something must remain as there is an oil seal there. A plug would work but still what about the gear?

Interested to hear what Sam says.
