TIRED OF POLISHING
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:50:48 AM »
I've spent hours and hours polishing just about everything on my bike, and despite breathing in 3 pounds of metal flakes, my bike looks great. However, the Aluminium is starting to pit again. Outside of wax, is there anything I can do to keep the aluminium from crapping out after a few months?

I use MAAS polishing cream. its always worked well for my engines, just make sure you keep the engine clean of gas/dirt/oil

You can clear coat it but if that ever fails, it will look worse than ever.  Just keep up on the polishing with some Mother's mag polish every now and then.  Not very hard and it brightens back up quickly.  The hard work is done.

I use Nev-R-Dull cotton wadding a couple of times a year and it does a great job of keeping the oxidation at bay.

Actually a good deal !

Todays prices, probably 5-800 to do the 750 engine parts, mine looked great for 25 years!

 Polishing @ 10 -30 hrs a year.. X say 5 years...

 Seems cheaper all the time...

10-30 hours a year?!!  I spend roughly 30 minutes every six months or so on mine with the cotton wadding.  Granted the engine doesn't look like chrome, but then the initial polishing didn't cost several hundred dollars either.

I have heard good things about Zoopseal..

I think I paid around 250 to chrome my engine studd around 77ish, and had no trouble for at least 25 years.(Even I can afford that)  Living near salt would make a big difference..

"granted the engine doesnt look like chrome".. never will either. even the best of polishing, unless successfully sealed, requires quite a bit of maintenance.. but still wont look like chrome for as long

Sliver painted engine, with chrome covers... aint nuthin cleaner

I've painted the motor and polished the points cover. However, the aluminium is just a royal pain in the ass to keep looking good! I'm not even done yet and it is starting to loose it's luster. Look at what I started with.....I want to keep it looking awesome! I'll try some of that mag cleaner stuff. Chroming seems a little pricey??

Well, I guess it's a good thing that I don't want it to look like chrome then, isn't it. ;)

Never dull Never dull Never dull.  .5 hours every time I wash :)  I like chrome but it definitely takes away that original look.  That said, the great thing about motorcycles is you change them to fit your personality and everyones personality is different just like the way we take care of our aluminum and maintain our bikes ;)

I use this stuff called Gibbs oil on all my bare metal parts with no clear coat. it will keep rust away for longer than 6 mos. by just wiping some on. takes seconds. it may work for oxidation as well. it is incredibly long lasting. I sanded and polished my switches/controls and use it on them as well and they're still shiny. I think those are aluminum. it creates a super thin waterproof barrier, so it seems like that would prevent oxidation.

you can also use it on bare metal that you are going to paint to keep flash rust from happening. best part is you don't have to remove it all with solvent before painting! just wipe it down and it's good. as far as I know it's the only oil that will do this, normally painting an oily surface is a big no-no.

the guy who invented it was a chemist/bike restorer. also good for guns, etc. great penetrating abilities as well. very small molecules or something like that. ???

hope this helps

I refinish al my bikes w/ polished aluminum ceramic coat, a nice, clean and lo-mantainance finish. u can polish it once in a while, too just to pick it up a bit, or leave it be, its extremely tuff stuff.

Can you explain the ceramic coat process? Polish it up until you get the look you want and then send it out for ceramic coating?

Now you know why Honda painted/coated the engine originally.

FYI.  It is not aluminum.  It is aluminum alloy.  The metal amalgams are not stable when exposed to atmospheric gasses and impurities.

Ceramic coating is a hi-quality and extremely durable bonding of aluminum particulates to metal, you could simply call it painting but that doesn't do it justice, the intense multi-step prep and curing plus a special ceramic medium is used on things like turbocharger blades, racing pistons, hi-temp applications etc. The nastiest aluminum valve cover returns w/ a beautiful aluminum refinish, ready to bolt-on. Its not a mirror-polished finish, more of a satiny aluminum not overdone look, and virtually impervious to heat, staining, and hard as a rock. And it polishes nicely because its made from aluminum ceramics.

Right you are, TT!  :)

And, the road dirt, like antifreeze and road "tars" will pit it real quick, too. The OEM clearcoat was supposed to slow that down.

I have discovered over the years that polishing with Simichrome (not cheap!) makes it last longer than any other polishes I've used. I've tried several other rouge-like or metal polishes, but the Simichrome-polished parts only seem to need attention once every few years, instead of once a year (or more). And I've recently found that if I polish those other parts with Simichrome over the other stuff, it makes them last longer, too. And, with some elbow grease, it can remove the pitting too, I recently discovered.  :o

So, when my engine comes out next time, I'm gonna get a can of the stuff instead of these little bitty tubes...

That ceramic stuff sure looks nice in these pictures, though...  ::)

Is there a chaine store that sells that simichrome? or do you have to buy it online?
