Cold Weather gear
« on: December 15, 2005, 06:18:35 PM »
In anticipation of Christmas gifts, and getting an earlier start to the riding season than I had this year(May, I live in Wisconsin)
What types and/or brands of cold weather riding gear do you guys use?

Well it's a mite cool here today mate, just a tad over 70 deg F after 90+ yesterday, so I figure my ol' Deep purple T shirt and a pair of gloves will be about right? ha ha, what about snow shoes so you can get out to your garage? Oops, sorry mate, couldn't help it! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I''m moving to Australia. I'm sick of the cold rain.
That way I can razz up the folks in the states come winter time,  I just don't know if I can pull off riding my motorcycle around with a mohawk and wearing chaps with my ass hanging out   ;D
( aside from Mad Max the only other Australian movie I know of is Romper Stomper and it doesn't have any motorcycles in it.)
I farted and made my son cry.

That's it Mr B, and you won't have to worry about the chaps and the mohawk, that's still way in the future! Romper Stomper was Russell Crowe's first "big" movie here, can't say I enjoyed it all that much, all that violence without any motorcycles is somehow, er, un-nerving............

There are lots of movies being made here (The Matrix, Star wars etc) but I rather enjoy the small budget "quirky" movies, I recently watched a movie called "Wolf Creek", if you get a chance, go and see it but beware, it's pretty disturbing and based on a true story, so it kinda throws a rather sinister cloud over the worlds perception of Aussie blokes as just friendly happy go lucky fellers. We've got our share of psychpaths out here too, and when they target international tourists in some pretty desolate spots around the "Top End", they can pretty much get away with murder.................

Anyway, if you do move out here, you can bring your roladex around to my place and we'll get wasted and then call up all your friends and razz 'em about the cold weather, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Bowhunter,
Not sure if anyone responded to your Q or not?
I wear Heine Gericke reinforced/armoured jacket, with a thermal liner, leather Frank Thomas bike trousers and need to wear ski thermals. Ski socks and leather boots.

I wear a Joe Rocket Ballistic jacket with armor most of the year , nice and warm with liner in.
A JR Phoenix Mesh jacket when it gets above 80 F in the summer. Usually just longjohns and jeans unless its below freezing then I wear my rain pants over those to keep out the wind.
Full face and neck Balaclava under the helmet.

A nice brisk 22 F on the 70 mile ride in to work this morning.....................but , it`s going to be a nice sunny day with 38 F on the ride home . ;D

Brrrrrr! It's 2am here and probably 70 deg F, I'm sitting beside an open window in a T shirt and shorts, and the ice in my JD is slowly melting, I think I better drink up and go to bed..............  ;D

well, i sold my last set of 4 wheels two days ago (good riddance)!

so, 2 it is from here on out... oh dear... it's gonna be cold... my yellow nuts are cowering already.

for me, it is as many freaking layers as i can stretch over the others... plus the leather agv sport jacket, neck warmer, and leather insulated gloves...

need to get the wraparound heated grips and set up the connections on all my bikes!

but, when its snowy or icy... i stick w/ the scooter... it's been downed on both sides before i inherited it so i'm not so afraid of scratches... aside from the ones incurred on myself.

Back in the old days when I did ride in the winter (thought about it this year, but the fireplace sure is cozy ;), on top of everything else, I wore ski bibs. Cut the wind very well and were roomy enough to fit over just about everything else I would wear.

I have no problem with the outter gear...it's the gloves I have
a problem with.   I have yet to find a warm pair of riding gloves
that aren't so stiff it's hard to flip the controls.

Maybe I should buy bigger gloves that don't fit as well.... :-\

I wear Buffalo M/Cycle jacket with armour and padded water proof over briechs trousers. Personally I dont think the jacket is much of an issue. as long as it is good water proof and armour of some kind is a good idea all year round. To keep warm I always go buy the old tradition of more layers, not all need to be thick. Hands are a problem - even if you can get a really good water proof glove, your hands are in an exposed position so it is dificuilt to keep them warm. The more layers on your fingers the less mobile they become. Never tried heated grips but they are an option too.

has anyone tried clipping on a mx hand guard to deflect the wind and rain? I haven't put any on yet but will soon.

Heated grips, all the way!!  I cannot say enough good things about these finger-savers.  I just rode around town today for about an hour trying to get access to the cash in my bank account.  It was 15 deg and my fingers stayed nice and toasty! :)  Before I got the heated grips, once it dropped below freezing my fingers would go numb in a matter of minutes.

As for the rest of the body, it's just layers, a ski mask, scarf, and occasionally ski pants that go over my jeans.

they may call you sissy, or one-fingered-wonder but, give some mittens a try... they work wonders.  well, they at least keep your fingers together instead of turning them all into individual extremeties...

the circulation in my fingers is pretty nil after frostbite many years ago working graveyards at the steelmill... i learned right then and there that if you wanna keep your fingers you should also consider keeping them together.
